Default Flashlight for my mom? (not a trade offer ;) )

    Hi,
Great site...awesome to find out how much I don't know. Lots of questions, but a quick one to start:

My mom lives on a farm and really likes her Inova X5. But she told me today she would like something brighter and smaller. I would love to get her something for xmas that fits her description and wanted some recommendations form the experts.

    So, smaller than the X5
    Brighter than the X5
    $50 range
    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance!
    J

4Sevens Quarks. They come in several different flavors, so there's bound to be one for your mom.

Also, since they're switching over from XP-E R2 emitters to XP-G R5's, you can pick up an XP-E R2 Quark AA for under 50 bucks!

What are your priorities? Is this going to be an 'important' light that you want to *know* will turn on when you need it to? If not, you could go with a DX light - you'll get blinding brightness with decent build quality for ~20$; toss in rechargable batteries and a charger for $10 more.

But if you need something highly reliable, your looking at 2-3x the price. I've heard good things about 4Sevens, but you might end up spending over 50$ for something noticeably brighter and smaller then the X5.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know what a DX light is. She is never too far from the house at night on the farm, but I want quality...she is my mom and all.
    Thanks

    a Quark123 might be a good choice

or a Dereelight javelin shorty. It's shorter than an X5 but the head will have a bigger diameter. It's available in neutral tint and good throw from a small light which would be nice outdoors. Plus since it uses P60's you could always upgrade it down the road

Either light with the coupon code would put you slightly over $50

Maybe a new multiple mode 2AA Mag light? Cheap, pretty bright and u would have left over $ for a nice rechargeable battery set.

My mom asked for an iTP AAA EOS in red. These lights are still the best bang/buck IMO.

Strange, but i interpret this to mean that she wants/needs TWO new lights.

    Oh, by the way . . . .

    Welcome to CandlePowerForums.

My vote also goes to a Quark.

Have a look at the different models, AA or CR123A, floodier (normal Quark) or throwier (Turbo, but nearly 70$).

Best will probably be a 123-2 or an AA-2 (not a real big difference in brightness, but NiMh or Lithium needed for all AA to get the real power) in regular version. The R2 is bright enough too and currently on sale...
My way : From Maglite and drop-ins over Fenix & Co to the real things - Customs and Titaniums!

    Hello J,
today, there are several lights smaller and brighter than the X5, such as the mentioned Fenix and Quark, 123 and AA lights.

One or double AA lights are much smaller, but keep in mind you are then switching technology and should probably get her a charger as well!

With much usage, rechargeables are cheaper on the long run.

If you want to stick with lithium primaries, take one of the mentioned in the 123 variant.
    Regards, Alex

Not such a great light anymore since they switched to the SP UI, I think, but YMMV...

    Fenix L1T V2.0 Q2 is only $48.50. Remember your 'CPF8' discount code!
Tighten head for high for outdoor use, loosen head for low for indoor use; then just click for on off. 1*AA.

I doubt your mom needs the blinky-blink modes which increases the costs of lights to ~$70.

how bout a lumapower mentor mc-e, 3 modes, low-med-high, and 500+ lumens on high ? 5" long a little fatter then the innova

your mom already has a small light thats ok (the innova) she wants a brighter light (not a litttle bit brighter, but BRIGHTER)

    brighter generally means bigger.

its about $90 but she will love it.

and might never require a brighter light?.

If and when the the big dookie hits the fan, and global chaos ensues, i want a couple of quality AA lights within reach.

DX is Dealextreme. A site with some good deals and slow shipping on products, as long as you read the reviews and know what you are buying. If you buy now, it might get here in time for Christmas.

I think a simple 2 mode light is probably good. Any of the other blinky modes could be more annoyance then useful.

AA powered would be good since AA batteeries are easy to come by. I'd suggest either the Romisen RC-N3 Neutral white from shiningbeam, the iTP SA2, or iTP C8R. 6% off coupon is "CPFuser"

For the non-flashaholics in my life, I stick with AA's and AAA's. The largest flashlight I would give is a 2xAA. Even a single AA will outperform their expectations and the recipient is much less likely to have larger lights around when needed.

A Quark MiNi AA might work as small, bright, and simple. I gave my mother a Maratac 9290 (AKA iTP C7T) and she likes it very much, although it's not as small. The iTP A3 EOS family is another great choice.

As much as I love the Quarks I wouldn't buy one for my mother (other than perhaps a MiNi AA).

If I remember correctly, the Inova X5 is rather floody because of its multiple LEDS. If she likes this floodiness, she might like something like the Fenix E20 for 35 bucks or the MG PLI MC-E for 57. The first uses AA's the latter uses CR123's or 18650's, whichever she might prefer.

I think the rayovac sportsman extreme or the lows taskforce or the duracell daylite might also be lights she'd like.

You can get the original Ui too. Which is very easy to use.
