Hi there, i am thinking of building a 5W, using the 5W available from sandwich site, can i build it using the badboy 500 or do i need the badboy 700? also, i need the connector and bare emitter board to attach the led to right?
is it possible to build a 5W in a mclux head non direct drive? is the heat sinking sufficient?
i dont know how to work out Vf and such so i didnt know which board to use, thanks
thanks for any help

you can make it with BB500, but then you will underdrive the lux. You can use BB700 and 750, np with that. But if you were using BB700 or 750, you have to supply at least 4.5 V, while on BB500, you can use 2 1.5 batteries. you don't need connector and emitter board to attach the led to Mc lux.

I plan on using a 5W HD LS with a BB750 and 4AA batts. Thats the brightest combo I can think of, if you use a converter board.

jtice, can i ask what housing u r using to build your light in? i looked at building it in a mclux housing but when the price of all components are calculated, its cheaper to just buy the L4, if i have another housing alternative which allowed me to run on alkalines, it would be good
cheers

I have 4.8v to supply a converter board for a 5w. Would this be perfectly fine with a badboy 700 or would it not be able to suck the batteries down very well? I just might have to use the BB500. Anybody have comparisons between 1ws and 5ws both running at 500ma?

I have a 5 watt with a 500 BB in a mini mag it is brighter than all my 1 watters even one with a 700 BB it runs on 2 AA
for about 30/35 min. a little hotter than a 1 watt with a 500 BB. Good wow light.

Minjin,

4 NiMH is 1.3-1.4 * 4 ~= 5.2V or so. This is a a good combo for the 500 and a 5W. There should be no problems with this combo.

OK, I've read all of this, however I'm still unsure of what I would need. I want to build my own McLux bezel, utilizing a 5-watt white LED. The plan is to run it from 2-123 cells. That being said, which circuit board(s) can I use and what's the advantage of each? Runtime, full-regulation, etc?

you can use BB500, 700 or 750. My latest mods all been using BB750 to drive 5W. All of them giving you full regulation, i think. But only the 700 and 750 that drive the lux to spec, to its full power. However, that comes with the expense of runtime.

nascar,

For what you just described you can eliminate Madmax... That leaves Badboy and the micro puck I think.

For the Badboy you can use any one. BB400, BB500, BB700, BB750. They all would work. BB700 would drive the 5W at the Luxeon specifications. The others would under/overdrive the 5W.

The more you drive the LED the lower the battery runtime would be and vice versa.

I've been wanting for a while to put a BB400 or BB500 into a McLux bezel, underdriving a 5W using a 1x123 tail. Supposedly you get around 2.5 watts doing that. The 1x123 McLux is much prettier than the 2x123 version, and running at 2.5 watts should give reasonable runtime and not cause too much heat problems. It seems like one of those combinations that just has to be built.
