There were 4 main things that I was trying to show with the pictures:
1) Difference in brightness. I think the pics are about right, but I couldn't nail down the contrast mostly due to the grainy nature of the pictures. Things should look sharper with the XP-G. The greens should pop a little better as well.

2) Similarity in overall coverage. The XP-G does well in covering almost the same area in the nearfield as the LS20.

3) The even quality of the beam at a distance. The most important aspect in my mind. I think that went okay with the pics.

4) Nearfield illumination. FAIL!!!! I couldn't get a good shot of anything from 5-10ft or so. I wanted to show that there is the traditional looking beam from a reflector based light, but the spot and spill blend better than most at close range. Maybe I'll try again tonight.

Thanks for being so diligent, Bighonu! I promise, I'll post some as well - actually looking forward to it. It warmed up here a bit, but now it is supposed to rain so I may have to do mine in a long hallway.

Yours look great - it's just tough to do justice to this light. It has already become my favorite...

I think a good "tell" on beam distribution is available on an even surface that extends from near to far field like the side of a building or an even ground surface such as a lawn. If the beam is held parallel to the surface then you can see the graduation of intensity as you move along it. In your shots, you have the lawn as well as the side of the house.

That is exactly why I chose the location for the shot!

I also thought that the side with the palms would give a good gauge for those looking for how the spill interacts with some fairly dense greenery. It is important to me at any rate.

It looks like this Haiku XP-G is going to be the beast I thought it would be. That just shows how well Don uses the English language!

I don't claim to be all that good at this, but I think these are fairly useful. Here's the set up - 18-20 feet away on my messy patio is a 'Big Green Egg' smoker. The first shot is a control shot taken on an overcast afternoon in northern Virginia. Then you have the 'dark' control shot, then all the comparison beamshots. Some of them are fairly dark - probably should have used a longer exposure, but I tried longer exposures and the photos of 'high' setting were washed out.

These photos are totally unedited with the exception of resizing them for the forum. If you want the original resolution photos, please PM me and I'll be happy to send them to you or give you a link.

And it's been said before, but these photos can't capture the subtleties of the XP-G beam - it is so smooth a transition from spot outward, but I think this gives a decent idea. The photos are labeled, so without further adieu..

The pictures on medium show the differences best : A little less brightness in the center (less throw probably), but a larger hotspot and a brighter spill.

It's what I also noticed on other lights which nw come with an XP-G and it's really my thing, the beam gets much more usefull. If you preffer a little throw however, you'd better stick to the XR-E version.

I hope I'll be able to catch one of these one day...

Congratulations Dime!! The enjoyment you'll experience using that fine tool/piece of art will only grow daily. I use mine every day and, yes, at the young age of 52, often find myself taking it from my pocket just to admire it. You know I also have the XR-E Haiku - they are bookends!

run4jc's beamshots pretty much confirm what I'd already figured out about Don's lights, which is that Don knows what kind of beam pattern he likes and he can figure out how to get it from pretty much any emitter on the market, which has the odd side-effect of making the emitter pretty much irrelevant when choosing which of his lights to buy. I don't think I've ever seen another brand of lights, or possibly of any kind of tool, with such consistent performance across the lineup that the hard part of the decision is which one feels the best, or which one looks the best, instead of which one works the best. That's the sort of dilemma that's generally reserved for decisions such as which pattern of china to buy -- but considering the wide use and long history of china plates, maybe that suggests something about the longevity of Don's lights too.
