So I what a cheap and bright light for my bicycle. Came across a mod where an Mr-16 bulb was used. I know these bulbs are pretty cheap 5-10 dollars. Should I even consider building a light using these bulbs. I was planing on using a 50 watt bulb so I would be looking at an output of 500+ lumens? Can these bulbs be driven directly or would I need a driver? I have a 12v 5a lead acid battery for this mod.

At that output you won't get an hour's runtime. There's an effect with SLAs where higher draw lops off effective amp-hours. It should work; grab an MR-16 on sale at home depot and run it across the batter. Cheap indeed, 12-15 lumens per watt ;)

Thanks for the relpy. So maybe I should use a 35w bulb for longer run time? Stupid question, do I have to use a bi-pin connector or can solder a wire directly to each pin? How can i tell which pin is positive or negative??

I don't know the MR-16 very well, but I'm pretty sure it won't matter which pin is +.

Ok I miss read this post. Your saying the sla's are bad for this project and not my choice of bulb. Maybe I should use some Nimh of Lion's for this project.Brian thanks for the link. Helped out alot :twothumbs

a note to be taken .... when yr MR16 gets dim, then its time to switch off ... u do not wan to drain yr sla or any rechargables .....
