I'm looking at the MD3 body option for mine, so that I can run two 18500s or 3 RCR123s, you say it can run on 3 Rechargeable Li-Ions above, at full top off that'll come to 12.6V... Is that still safe for the Light as the voltage range is 5-12V? Don't wanna fry it

    Cheers.
It will run with 3 RCR123's, talked to Gene today. Its going to draw 1 amp at 6V and 0.75 amps at 9V and 0.5 amp at 12V.

3 RCR123 only read 12.6V under no load condition. At 0.5A the voltage will sag and its not an issue. Gene has tested it to make sure its up to his very high standard of reliability.

Now for the really hot news for all those waiting to hear. The LED current is in the 1.40 to 1.49 Amp range. It will have a 22 ohm resistor in the low mode ring to allow 40 to 60 lumens based on the voltage used, so it will have a very useful low mode with excellent run time.

I should have one in hand for testing in about 8 days from 7/24/10. This will be very easily run on an MD2 with 2 standard lithium batteries (also 2 RCR123) or in an MD3 with 3 it should run 30% longer and the MD4 with 2X18650's or 4 CR123's it should run basically double that of the MD2.

I think I will get the MD3 and run it on 2x18500. I wonder how much longer that will run than the 2xcr123?

Glad to hear... Was hoping that was the case, was going to call him, but time difference would mean he'd be pretty mad at me... lol

    Thanks Gman

This one has to be the best Malkoff ever made.
I like the idea of using 2x18650 *or* 4x123, much flexibility here. Use Li-Ion when you can, use 123s as a backup. 5V-12V is ideal for me.

7-degree beam is also real neat, just a shade tighter than 8-degree M60 beam as far as I understand? It's really not *that* tight, and a lot wider than say Mag beams. So 7 degrees are still very practical for all around use.

Dual mode is also exactly what I want, and the lumen choices couldn't be better. Any idea of the runtime?

Question, what kind of holster would it fit in?

Does the 199$ price include md2/3/4 body or is it for the head only? In that case, it looks a bit pricey, but on the other hand, it's Malkoff! It really looks very tempting!

I like the disclaimer in big, red letters:

WARNING: This light is capable of causing eye damage at close range. Please use the light responsibly!!!

    That's not a warning, it's marketing.

Gene should make a M61 that is rated at 325 lumens. I would love to have the XP-G driven this hard with the M61 beam shape. I could use an extra 60 lumens, the brighter the better!

The bigger hound doggie head has much more mass and heat sinking capability to make this possible yet keep it reliable. Plus those long floppy ears dangling in the wind make for great cooling fins.

you cannot possibly be member #1. Since I have s/n 002 coming to me and helped generate the idea that put this into the works right after I tested and reported on the M61 (youtube videos under MrGman9999) when it came out, I was in the ultra top secret line before you knew there was a dog pound to be in. I was sworn to secrecy. You can be Dog Pound member #2.

the dog pound idea was also "top secret" and now so will the pictures and videos be from you .

But I will show them to everyone else who knows the secret blinky blinky light code. Unless you acquiesce to being DPM #2.

Having met Gene, I would say that it is a warning. The guy is a straight shooter.

Ah, good point, I didn't think of heat sinking capacity. Think Gene will eventually offer just the head for sale?

Already answered this. Not at first, he has two runs of lights that will be offered as complete light assemblies with your choice of host but he did say eventually he would sell the head as he sells the wildcat head now.

not to hijack this, but mrgman, do you know when any wildcats are coming out?

This light is wildy popular and he always has more batches being machined or anodized or somewhere in the works. There will be another batch along in a couple weeks. You should always be signed up for email notification and on his members list so that you get as much early notice as possible when things come out for this or any other model light or module he makes as a general rule. Because when he has a batch out there and every one gets notified, they will be sold rather quickly.

This hound dog light will likely hit 350 plus OTF.....Gene advertises like Surefire and is very conservative which is

Here are the benefits I see:
    • More throw
    • More throw then Mag XP-G builds?
    • More heatsinking material
    • At 1.5A XP-G R5's tint looks more white....really I have noticed that when you drive XP-G's at lower currents tint is kinda green. At 1.4~1.8A = it majically turns white. Is this also seen by others?

I don't think so. At comparable drive current and with a comparably high quality reflector, I'd expect the Mag build to out-throw the McR38.
