I built this puck lantern using 10 Cree C503C series white LEDs. It looks like something odd, like a UFO. It really lights up a small room well. It runs off of 9 volts @ 100ma. I used a 2" PVC end cap fitting to house the LEDs.

I might try a semi circle design next with two rows of LEDs. It could mount high up and shine down. I need to figure out a battery case to go with it to be truly portable.

Take me to your leader

I also have a UFO but it's stuck to my ceiling, in the
form of one of those saucer-shaped camping lanterns
(similar to Led Shoppe offering), that has two rings of 24 LEDs.
It's been marooned there for 2-1/2 years but still providing
good light, until the owners come back to retrieve it...

Now, for your design, could it benefit from wrapping
with aluminum tape, to improve reflectivity?

JR, you should get one of those cheap hovering toys and mount this to it. It will even out the side spots and solve the elevation problem. :twothumbs

And resistance is futile...

The reason I mention it is because I added aluminum tape
to the inside base of a large solar garden lamp, which was also
black plastic, and it improved apparent brightness. The tape
was thinner aluminum stuff used for ductwork (there may be
some thicker stuff used for bodywork but suspect it's hard
to work with).
