The answer depends on the source voltage. If you were trying to use 3.6V LEDs with a 12V source, it would be best to put 3 is series (10.8V) and drop the remaining voltage (1.2V) with a resistor. If you put the LEDs in parallel, you'd be dropping 8.4V (12-3.6) for each LED. A real waste of electrons.

If you had a lower source voltage, like 4.5V, then it would be best to put the LEDs in parallel since even just two LEDs in series would need more voltage than the source could supply.
