Thread: *NEW* Cree XM-L Mag Drop-In

  1. #1

Default *NEW* Cree XM-L Mag Drop-In

I have measured approximately 10% more lumens from the new Cree-XM-L when installed in the mag Drop-In. I measure 880 Out the Front lumens in my own home made Sphere.

The Drop-Ins can be ordered here

2 are currently in stock for immediate delivery

Mac, what is stock currently like and what do you recommend, the 4500 or the 6500 temp? This is my first Mag Mod, I have a 3 "D" cell incandescent I want to upgrade.
    Thanks

That looks sweet, dumb question alert: does it have last mode memory?

Mac, does the color difference from the SST-50 4500K?

Is there a waiting list on this item?

    Thanks!

The color for the XM-L drop-in is around 6000k so it is cooler than the SST-4500k. There is currently no waiting list on drop-ins.

Got mine today but no pins to install. No need for them.
This thing is bright, love the tint, the only question I have is there a trick to mode changing consistently?
    I seem to get, med-high-med-high-med-low.

Sounds like you have a dirty switch Is it in an older mag?

Brand new but now that you mention it the switch sounds gritty.
Also after leaving it on high and turning it off for a few minutes it reverts back to low when switched back on.
Wonder if the switch is wonky?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Do you have a picture of the light comparison between SST-4500K and XM-L drop-in?

I have a hard time to see the difference between this two.

BTW, do you offer BoroFlot Lens or any other accessories for the drop in?

    Thanks!

While waiting for my Tenergy D cells to fully charge I played with the gritty new switch.
All is great now, this thing is crazy bright. The build quality is top notch.
It can nearly throw as far as my M40A ( the brightest LED light I had until this guy) and the drop-in puts out 50% more light in a ceiling bounce test, amazing when you consider the smaller reflector.
Oh and IMHO the pins really are not needed, one can use chopsticks, metal tipped pens, finish nails just about anything small enough to fit in one hole, I used a Ti spike.
I may have to order another.

Yes there is a boro lens option on the Drop-In Purchase page. Sorry I do not have a comparison shot between the SST-50 4500k and XM-L.

Mine is doing the same thing, bouncing to different light levels in no particular order.
Did you do anything in particular to the switch or just clean the contacts?

I took it out, disassembled/cleaned and lubed it. I put krytox grease on the plastic ratcheting parts and Pro Gold on any metal/moving/contact surfaces, mine was brand new so I think the real problem was the switch was mis-aligned in the body but the cleaning and lubing surely make for a better feel(the misalignment to the body would be fine in a strictly on/off UI, but with a 3 speed driver the alignment is vital IMHO).

Here is a link to the removal/disassembly/reassembly. HTH

Thanks for the quick reply, I cleaned the contacts with some 1000 grit sandpaper earlier and had no luck, I decided to grab a new Mag at Home Depot ($15.00) since mine was almost 10 years old and in terrible shape, the switch works perfectly. Glad it wasn't the Drop-in! I think you have some great advice for switch maintenance and I'll give this a shot because I am reluctant to throw a light away.

Anyway, it seems these drop-ins can be picky about the switch, not so bad though since I ended up with a fresh new light!

No problem, contact mag about the old light's switch they should send out a replacement.

Mac, are there any chances of a tri-XM-L mag drop-in?

    Beamhead,
I know it's a little soon but, Any beam shots yet?

I am deciding between getting the warm 4500k SST or the wall of XM-L.

    Thanks
    GL

The post you quoted is 4 months old and from the order site in the OP
"Please allow up to 4 weeks for shipment as these are custom built to order and are non refundable."

Exactly why I'm wondering if maybe things changed and there are now possibly some modules in stock and ready to ship.
