I did an interesting experiment, I own both the Ludlum Model 3 GM survey meter and a Model 19 Scintillation low gamma survey meter.
Anyhow I did a test using a simulated suitcase nuke (via a piece of Torbernite) inside of a sealed acrylic case which is then inside of a round lead container and then encased inside a metal ammo container.
I brought the box in and out of the room and measured the differences using two tools (Model 3 and model 19) both placed in the same locations.
Anyhow its pretty stark when you compare the difference. One thing for sure, a GM device will not provide any change or alarm above standard background compared to the Model 19 when such a device is in a room.
