Outside the obvious 'easy upgrade' reason;
one thing I'v always liked about P60 lights is being able to swap around parts,
to make a new light and keep things interesting.

I'v tested about every possible combination of pill/reflector setup, some are good, some better.

Well, I thought I'd test my Dereelight XP-E pill in the Smooth Parabolic reflector from the Ultrafire {MF} XM-L drop-in,....whammm, a beamshot I really wasn't expecting :eek:

The hotspot is almost totally dedicating the emitter light
and it reminds me a bit of the DBS,..yes the DBS

Finally a true P60 thrower!

Hotspot beamshot from about 7' away
If you look close or highlight the image you can see the spill (actually lack of spill)

the XP-E is a Q5 with a 5A tint

The hotspot is definitely tighter in person (camera distortion)
.. no rings either

It is possible~:thumbsup:

Most interesting! Thanks for sharing, I'll have to try it out for myself later. I've always liked how throw-oriented Solarforce P60 reflectors are, especially the XP-G ones.

Definitely something I'm going to have to try. Thanks for all the experimenting!

wow thats freeky. Im surprised no one has tried something like this before with a high flux BIN XPE.

Is the XPE die surface brighter than the other emitters.

See post #1 P60 Flashlight List {host}
the pill/reflector setup looks basically the same

If you want, I'll take another pic

--------------------

kramer5150, its much more about viewing angle than brightness,
then how the light's focused.

~ funny enough, a couple hours after posting this thread, it looks like R4 XP-E are becoming available

Yeah - focusing the beam ... U can do the same thing with a stock reflector to some extent ...
Screwing in and out - The reflector - can sometimes help to focuse for a much tighter beam ...

R4 XP-E ?

I made a correction to the OP,

the Solarforce & Ultrafire reflectors look nearly identical,
in swapping stuff around, the reflector I used is the Ultrafire.
Honest mistake

The Solarforce doesn't focus quite like the Ultrafire when using the Cree XP-E

Yes, I got the Cutter email a few hours after posting this thread,
timing is everything...:)

Manafont sells a smooth reflector that appears to be the same one used on the Ultrafire XM-L. It's sku 6047. I have two on order to confirm it. :thumbsup:

Dew point is 76F right now at 9:30P ,..steamy & almost impossible to take a shot
with my camera << :caution:

The top of the trees, yes those are trees, are about 25~30 yrds. away

I would like to see a side by side beamshot comparison of the Solarforce skyline II and this setup, because it seems like they might be similar in beam profile and potentially lux. Great find!

Orbital,

What are you driving the XP-E at?

This is a good find indeed. I think previously the record is a SMO P60 XR-E R2 drop-in with 1.3A driver or 1.4A driver. These with good high bins do 13~14K lux at 1m, but the beam is really ugly. Nice to see the XP-E can offer such throw cause those emitter typically dont have the cree rings and I take it the beam is nice too.

My next build will definitely have to be this drop-in. Maybe 1.4A to the LED via just 1 or 2 AA cells...yikes. Imagine that much throw in a P60 format off just 2 AA cells.

Thanks and good find,
bigC

1.2A on High {its' a 3SD}

Definitely a good setup,
there are no cree rings and there is some usable spill at higher output,..for hiking ect

Like other SMO setups, and even a 8 degree optic, there is a bit of 'softening' in the very center of hotspot,
this is non factor for intended use

A cooler tint like a WC/D will likely give an added boost in yardage.

~ Not to take thunder from the XM-L, cuz its the real deal,
but a P60 beam for distance, the XP-E is a more accurate tool.

It's easy to make floody light, the other side of the coin is a bit tricky ;)
