I've got a 20x40 shop with 14 foot ceilings. I am ready to put lights in. My question is what is the best lighting in both efficiency and light output. 8 foot units or maybe this some of the canister style highs mount lights like you see in gyms and warehouses. They are 240volt but only draw a little over 2 amps.

Anyway any educated opinions would be greatly appreciated I want this shop to be well lit

Linear tube fluorescent is very cost effective and efficient. High intensity discharge (HID) are the ones you see with the big reflectors, such as in gyms and such. HID is also efficient but can be expensive upfront.

For a small space like that I would go with florescent. Upfront expenditure should be considerably less, generally making them more cost-effective.

Both the selection and availability of 4' tubes/fixtures seem immensely better than 8'.
