Thread: Need Help with a budget light setup.

Default Need Help with a budget light setup.

I want a new handlebar light setup with 1000+ lumens. My budget is $160.00 tops.

My plan was to use two of these:

    with two of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/Angle-MagicShi..._sim_sbs_sg_51

Does anyone have any experiences with these lights or any better suggestions?
How many OTF lumens are realistic, like 800 each?

    Consider this:

Put one, with that broad, sharp cutoff lens and one of these:

close to the left of your stem (these accessories actually can be bought together from this same place, I use and recommend them).

Put the other one (with the stock lens and reflector) slightly farther to the right of the stem clamp (and carefully aim both.)

Since you're partially disassembling one light, you might as well do both. Shake out any chaff, check wiring, add thermal paste and plug the power wire exit hole with silicone or caulk or whatever you have at hand to waterproof.

You now have the best of both a fog-midbeam and a strong long-throw headlight, well under your budget. Charge the batteries thoroughly but never out of sight, no more than eight hours (watch the charge indicator closely) and be prepared to replace them with four-cell units next year (they are the weak point.) After some experience you may want to check out some of the alternative handlebar mounts to the O-ring system.

These are bright, cost-effective lights; the lumen/lux and battery-life claims are meaningless until you have something to compare with. Try them on low first, take care not to shine 'em in anyone's face and you just might like 'em as well as I do.
