Thank you for posting, since I was starting to think that maybe I was the only one who found the N219 illumination ... somehow ... yes, "unnatural"

Which is odd, since the N083 (cool bins) and N119 (warm bins) are just beautiful for me

Is there variation in the tint between the two that you received? Mine looks pink only when I compare it against another light. It is not noticeable when using the light by itself, even against a white wall.

I like them enough to keep them, although I'm hard pressed to discern the step up in color rendition from 80 to 90 CRI. The leap from 70 to 80 enormous, but I think there's a point of diminishing return. Maybe I'm just a CRI philistine.

On the bright side, the N219's are much nicer than my CW emitters.

My 219's look very similar to each other. Any difference is probably a function of brightness. (50lm vs 225lm).

I can't unsee the color, no matter what I'm looking at. My eyes are so long accustomed to yellowish neutral crees that the nichia just looks alien.

I'm sorry to be negative, fellas. I hope you all enjoy your new drop ins.

Hmm...perhaps the difference is biological. My eyes may not be as sensitive to particular wavelengths as yours are. I have a friend, for instance, who has a light that looks positively green to me, but he doesn't see it.

My M61 219b is probably my least favorite Malkoff dropin as well. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw but I like the W and N models a bit more.

    Good to see you.

Reading your answer I assume hosts will be available to the general public.

    Is it true?

I have some dropins with Nichia led and I really like them.

when we speak of tonality there is a bit of subjectivity and personal taste.

it is a fact that nichia led is not a revolution, but has its merits and are gaining prominence in the market every day ... perhaps because many cheap and / or custom lanterns are being sold with this "differential".

but there are cases where the difference between an nichia led and another led is very small

the new sportac 219c are very similar to the sportac xpl-hi neutral model.

similarly, the dropin oveready v5 219c also resembles the dropin v5 xpl-hi.
when i received the dropin v5 with led xpl-hi ieven thought they had sent me an nichia model. lol

but, comparing them I could see the subtle difference.

it is known that nichia leds have a higher CRI, but there are many leds that are very good too.
for example, the dropin oveready v5 xpl-hi
it uses excellent leds, with CRI higher than normal

summarizing: I particularly like the nichia leds.
They have a place in my heart.

Based on the artist's concept, I think it will be a good seller. It appears to have more texture, if not knurling, which would hopefully satisfy those customers who think the current Makoff hosts are too smooth. Personally, I like the current MDC bodies, but I'll still probably end up with some new ones.

I believe the biggest differential of the new host is the button going out of the host.
this makes it impossible to leave the flashlight standing on the base (tailstand), but allows it to be used in "cigargrip".

for tactical use will be a very important improvement in product design.

219 from a few years ago is a bit odd looking. It is kind of pink or rosy something. Mine looks a bit pink-gray if that is possible.

Now the 219B is a different picture, it looks much better. Maybe the ideal tint. A bit better than regular M61.

I use the M61LLL 219B as my regular light.

Happy with tint, runtime off 2x18500 and lumens and throw/flood combination. All of it.

I do not like my M61LL 219. I do like my M61LLL 219B. Luxeon lottery maybe.

The 219 series solves a problem that does not exist.

Default The Official Malkoff Junkie thread - Part 2

my 31ll 219 arrived today. I am going out of town for a few days so I threw it in a vme head and a 2AA body. it's going to be my utility light where my peak el capitan non qtc number 4 high cri usually is, my tactician in another pocket for obvious use. I'll check in as the 219 gets used these next few days.

I'm a huge fan of Malkoff, but I think from a tactical point of view that the Surefire design is superior. That said, I haven't had either in my hand so I'm judging only by the two images and based upon my prior experience using such handheld lights on SRT, warrants and entries, and current mandatory low light qualifications and training.

A lot will depend upon how pronounced the forward "ring" is on the Malkoff design, as well as the positioning of the pocket clip...and how one chooses to grip the light in a tactical situation. Sometimes one or more different techniques will be required in a given situation.

Here is a link to a few of the most popular techniques:

Gene, How about adding M31LL with neutral 4000K 80CRI to your line up?

I'd buy one, but I doubt there's enough interest to make it worth his while.

For my style the Malkoff pictured would feel more natural. But that is based on my hand size too... or at least the spread between my fingers and thumb. I'd probably remove the clip and opt for a holster if belt carry were the method of carry. And I'd add a #14 or 15 rubber o-ring at the tailcap of the grip point just for the added traction of the rubberized neoprene vs metal.

Looks like that one will be a great design. And the protruding button a bonus for quick action requirements during high stress situations. Yet it will still have a fairly conventional look, but unique enough to know who makes it (until the cloning starts that is).

I tried one of Tanas 219B at 4000k and found it to be a decent 'mach' lightbulb look in an E2. The slight rose tint was nowhere near as noticable as I've seen in other 219B's so it doesn't put out that "shopping mall parking lot light" looking beam. He said his 5000 has a yellow look. I still prefer Gene Malkoffs N version over anything Nichia has done.

I think what looks natural varies person to person though. To me Tanas 3000k looks closer to natural than anything except for PK's 6200k beams.
    Yeah.

I'd prefer each of them without a clip for this purpose....unless it would somehow prove unobtrusive in use. (I doubt it.) Which is why the 6z with belt holster and wrist lanyard was so useful for deployment.

That said, I don't think Gene's going to put a clunker out there, so I'm very interested in seeing the final product.

(I rarely use a Rogers grip anyway.)

The real advantage of the Nichias is that Illumn sells M31s in LL and LLL. That being said, the yellow of a neutral can look a bit unnatural at times too but I do like it slightly better than the rosy 219B. I do notice that the 219B is easier on the eyes in the dark and does render color a bit better though.

All that being said, if Malkoff made a M31N LL, I'd get one.

^^ It would be good ($$) for Gene to stock all the M31N's - I would buy a couple as well!
