Thread: The Official Malkoff Junkie thread - Part 2

    Thank you Craig and Gene.

My two M61 219 dropins. Full of win! Perfect neutral tint and flawless beam. One for the Z2 and one for the Z3.

Malkoff junkies you really need to pick these up.

The tint is whiter and less yellow than the M61NL from oveready.

    Here's my malkoff line up M61, M61NL (oveready), M61 219

I know the topic of the hour here is the 219 Malkoff and trust me, I'm drinking the cool aid (I have a 219 and a 219LLL on order from Craig) but I wanted to mention something about the Malkoff Mag drop in.

I ordered a 3-6 D drop in a while back, and modded it to a CREE High CRI XP-G. It was pretty nice but the beam was just ugly. I guess the reflector just wasn't optimized for the XP-G on the post and of course it's a smooth reflector to boot. Anyhow, I ordered an orange peel reflector from KD in hopes that it would help clean up the beam. It was too expensive and the shipping took a while but it finally showed up yesterday. All I can say is WOW!

All of the weird rings in the beam are gone and most importantly, the spill appears to be between twice and three times as bright! Plus there is now a nice smooth transition between the hot spot, corona and spill. I had hoped it would smooth out the beam a little but it has surpassed my expectations. This was not exactly what I would call a very usable light before as the hot spot was so intense and the spill so dim. With this new reflector, it makes a great all around light. I would highly recommend it as an addition to any Malkoff Mag mod.

They are a very nice addition to the mag Malkoff. Have one in my chromed finned and grooved 2C.

You can grab some clearcoat and make one pretty close to it if you like.
Rather than speckling it I like to hose it down and as it dries out I keep switching it from face up to face down. Keeping it in your hand and constantly moving the thick layer of clearcoat around makes some interesting waves in the finish. I don't cut the cam till after it's the way I want and dry.
Took a few tries to get the hang of it but it's neat to experiment.
Another standard mag reflector trick to try? Paint the blue side!!!
If you light up the standard reflector without the head on you'll see some light does pass thru the plastic. Put a nice layer of white on it and test to see if you get more OTF lumens.

If you aren't using the standard reflector you might as well play around with it.

The only thing i dont like about the malkoff 219 is that i get a dark ring in the spill beam but with the malkoff XP-G i get a perfect beam i guess the the reflector is optimized for the XPG.

Yeah cause Don designed it for the XPG couple years ago for Gene.
This Nichia wasn't in the plan.
That said, it's suprising how good it looks. I've seen ugly beam patterns, the 219 isn't too shabby at all IMO.
I got my start in the days of shoe horning XRE's into luxeon reflectors. Still have nightmares lol

Outdoor beamshots please! I already placed my order; but I'm interested in how this dark ring looks. Probably won't bother me at all.

Mine has the ring and outdoors it was just fine. With that beautiful white tint and vivid colors, probably due of that tint, I'm more than pleased. I have mine in an MD2.

Now that is a thing of beauty Craig.... I might have to get a full power M61 219 to go along with my M61L 219 that's in the mail right now after seeing this.... Thanks for the beamshots!

Looking at the beam shape, the 219 appears to be floodier than the M61, is that what you saw with your eyes, Craig? I see a lot brighter lighting outside the main beam.

The tint of that M61 219 is just plain awesome. Makes me glad I never jumped on the M61HCRI XPG bandwagon.

Awesome beamshots Craig. Can't wait until I get my M31. Then I'll have to have one of the M61 219's. Awesome color tint. Could'nt have asked for a better beamshot, you nailed it perfectly.

EDIT: I just placed an order for a Nichia M61 219.

I'm running a K2 LifePO rechargable battery that Surefire sells in my M31N. I've got it in a VME head, and a E1B body. I'm using the Ultrafire WF-138a charger set on the 3.0 setting. They meter 3.39 volts after a charge, and let them set for around 5 minutes they drop to 3.34 volts and stay there. The only thing is I get ~35 minutes of burntime at full output, and then it starts dropping down. But I'm O.K. with that, because there's not that big of a difference in burntime with a regular CR123a. And the K2 is the battery, I plan to use in my M31N. I figured I'd pass this info on. But try it at your own risk.

Craig, I received my M61 219 today (thanks for the speedy shipping, by the way). This thing is...literally...awesome. Just perfect. Unbelievable, at least to my eyes (we don't all see colors the same). It is a very good match with the M61NLLL I got from OR, too, but the perfect color temp on this one literally shines at full power. I just can't say enough. I may order another soon, though I am up to mid-calf height in Malkoff drop-ins now!

You guys need to get off your duffs and order one of these things! Just amazing...

Man those look nice. Im overspent otherwise I would order one, maybe a M31 next month. I was talking with someone else and they had mentioned a VS Wildcat with these Nichia emitters. That would be a sight to see.

Looks comparable to the M61N (first W version), unless my eye are mistaken.

    Yes, I believe the M61N is 4000k, while the M61 219 is 4500k.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I got 4hrs and 22min of FULL output with my M61L 219 using a protected AW17670. Very impressive module!

    Thank you Craig and Gene!

What!? The math... it doesn't work! How is that not some kind of efficiency record?

Hey, you tell me... I know people were getting 3-3 1/2 hours of runtime at full output using a 17670 for regular XP-G M61L. So I don't know... I don't have one of those light spheres to measure lumens, but the output appeared the same to me throughout the entire 4hrs and 22 minutes - it ran in direct drive for 15 minutes after that before I shut her off.

I'd interested if someone else could perfrom this test to confirm my results.

Awesome light with a great tint and beam! The colors are so rich!
