Thread: Need help with a light weight weapon light.

Default Need help with a light weight weapon light.

I'm just learning about lights so please bear with me and be gental.

I'm trying to replace my rifle light with something lighter and preferably brighter. My ACR is already on the heavy side and my big ass light just makes it worse. The light I have is a Hellfighter X8 Turbo flashlight, its rated at 380 Lumens and honestly it’s just as bright, maybe even less bright then a friends 230 Lumen Elzetta light. The one thing I do really like about it is its pressure pad actually has little clicky buttons inside instead of being one crappy long button.

Anyways I’ve been looking at several lights. For comparison, the X8 weighs 6.5oz and is like I said 380 lumens. So any suggestions for something lighter and either equal to or brighter? And does anyone have any experience with either of the lights listed here. The weight is the priority but it still has to be at least as bright and be able to withstand me treating it like I hate it. Also I'll be using this for medium range shooting (25m-300m), So I need to be able to illuminate multiple targets out pretty far. Oh and like I mentioned it had to be able to use a remote ressure switch that doesnt suck.

The one that looks most promising is the EagleTac T20C2 MK II XM-L, its rated at 770 lumens/626 ANSI Lumens it weighs 4.3oz. But I've never heard of this brand.
Has anyone heard about or experienced this brand/lights quality and durability?

Someone mentioned the Inforce light, the 6v only weighs 3.3oz but its only 200 lumens so I'd like it to be brighter. Is there a way to upgrade the light with some sort of drop in?

The Elzetta lights look great, really great, but I'd light something brighter and lighter since they range from 5.3oz for the 2 cell to 6.5oz for the 3 cell but more importantly they also come at twice the price ($230).

    Thanks in advance

    Dustin

ETA: Also I was told the Surefire Fury wouldnt hold up to being mounted to a rifle, how accurate is this? would it work or could I find something better?

    Anyone have any thoughts?

Just to clarify since I know its a bit wordy of a post; I need something under 5oz, brighter then 500 lumens and be able to throw a decent beam out 250 yards or more. The lighter the better. My price range is under $150 and the body needs to be either 1in or .80in to fit in my Vtac light mount. It also needs to be able to use a tape switch.

Hope that makes it a bit more clear. Thank you.

    Thanks for the reply.

How far will that light throw a beam? How does it compare to the EagleTac or my current Hellfighter?

The Klarus is a bit more flood but will throw fairly well to about 150 yards.

Xtar makes a model with the XPG-R5 that will throw fairly well. Check the markteplace section for various lights.

which Xtar are you refering to? Is it the TZ-20 Platoon?

How would you compare the two?

ETA: What about the Olight M21-X?

The Xtar TZ20 with XML has almost exactly the same beam profile as the XT-11 and to my eye is maybe just slightly brighter when viewed side by side. The Klarus is a bit better built but the Xtar is still a very high quality light and a viable option especially if you do not need the ability to add filters. I have tested both on my M4 duty gun and have no issues. The Klarus will accept multiple battery sources. The TZ20 in XML will only accept Li-Ion. The R5 version will accept CR123 primary batteries or Li-Ion. I am going to be running the Klarus XT-2C on my 12ga. Pump

Does the TZ20 accept a tape switch?

how do either of those compare to the Olight M21X?

What batteries would get the highest output out of the XT-11? Im even newer to batteries than to flashlights lol Hellfighter recommended using Titanium CR123s but they didnt make a difference at all and after a little reading here Ive been noticing that 3.0v batteries arent as good.

The TZ20 does have a tape switch. I think the build is about equal to the O lights in build quality.

Yeah, the XT11 is great weapon light, and with a good night sight, 250 yards would work. With iron sights, ~150 yards would be the practical limit though. Its multimode pressure switch is sweet though...all modes are available from the remote, brightness and even strobe, not just on/off, etc.

300 meters is a long range for a small light to throw anything really meaningful out there, unless again you have a good night sight.

Some guys use the DEFT edc LR+ and the Deerelight Ashpheric lights for long range night shooting. The DEFT is great on targets, but not tactical, as the lens glows after the light's off...the Deerelight's a bit larger headed, and the lens goes dark when its off...but neither comes with a remote.

The Deerelight does project like a MoFo though.

Deerelight Aspheric aimed at round tree 405 meters away.

I use either an Eotech or an Accupoint 1-4x optic depending on what I'm doing, usually the Eotech though. So no iron sights at night.

Those lights are pretty insane but out of my price range and at least in the case of the Deerelight over the weight limit, and the DEFT edc LR+ is out of stock.

I think I'm stuck between the XT11 and the TZ20. Which would throw a brighter beam the farthest?

Hows the quality of the tape switch for the TZ20? Is it possible to use the ED-10 pressure switch for the TZ20?

The tape switches only work with each brands own lights

    Thanks.

This may be a stupid question but why do the tape switches only work for their own brand?

In the case of the Klarus the functionality is in the switch. In the case of Xtar the functionality is in the head. Also each manufacturer varies the pitch of the threads.
