    Default MALKOFF XM-L Drop-In for 3-4D MagLite

Got the new Malkoff XML for my 3d mag. His other ones were ok. Actually preferred terra lux. However this new drop in is awesome. Great throw and very bright for the mag. Great duty light as always. To anyone that was on the fence.....this thing rocks. I love having the super bright beam and still have the good ol mag adjustment. Top of the heap imo.

Got mine a couple days ago and im very impressed. It throws about the same as my fenix tk40 but with twice the flood.

My review from the Malkoff thread

Rated at 700 lumens, spot on. Only had the 630 TK40 to compare it with and it looks just as bright. At these levels even the ceiling bounce was hard to gauge with just my eyes as to the difference. What was really good was the throw. It lights things up better than the TK40 at a distance. I don't really have any other throwers but this is great. 100 metres, not a problem, the tree on other side of the football field was lit in all it's glory.

Tint on my XM-L was a bit green around the edges when compared to the TK40, which now seems a bit blue. Initially I didn't notice the green and though that the overall tint was a little bit warm. Very happy with the unit. Have to keep the head out of focus as the light is just searing when it is tightly focused and you turn it on near a wall.

Unit was easy to install as usual. I put it in my 4D and the head did get warm after 5 minutes. Not blistering hot let alone hot. On a side note, the Tenergy centura LSD D cells didn't have a problem with amperage being drawn from them.
Also want to add that the XP-G is better than the terralux. Like this one, the heat sinking is top-notch. I still have it installed in my 4D. The size matches the light better.

do you need to upgrade the lens or reflector with these drop ins? or will they sustain the heat. i'm new to this.

You need to modify the existing reflector, you can read about it on the website.

are you running it off standard alkaline D's? My boss REALLY wants something like my 5*Cree R2 "drop in" that I have but doesn't have the knowledge/skill/time/interest in wiring and grinding and probably doesn't want to have to go buy "special" batteries and chargers. I know this thing will run off alkalines per the website but it says at a "reduced output", any idea how reduced?

Maybe just get him the XP-G model instead. Full regulated output on alkalines and awesome throw. Costs much less too.

True, and it is a TRUE drop-in aside from cutting the reflector right? And it's twice as bright as the stock LED so it's not a bad idea...

It would be nice with this drop-in to upgrade one of my Mag 3D. Or why not the 1D with the 3xAA carrier...
