I recall buying a 650nm pointer around the mid 90s for about $20. It was a pretty fair deal at the time if I recall correctly. I also remember paying $100 for a 635nm diode around that time (which I promptly blew out just moments after starting to work with it). Lesson learned: always use a soft-start driver circuit!
