Default Poorly made R2K?

was concerned about a little visible buble next to the die. How will this affect my beam quality? I'm assuming the blue halo effect? It's going in a McLux PR so I wanted to find out before I waste my time. If it does make a big difference in beam quality would it be as noticeable if it were used with an optics, such as a fraen lp? Txs for any feedback!

Yes, you will see a notable distortion when using Fraen. It's far less a problem if you use a simple reflector.

How big is the bubble? If you use optics and it covers a quater of the die or more then you will have a dark spot in the beam. If you use a relfector I doubt it will be that bad. Power it up with batteries and put it in the reflector and test it out.

I had a Q3L on a BB module that had a couple bubbles in it. Bare or with a McFlood it looked fine, but as soon as you put optics in front of it you could see two distinct blue spots. I think Wayne's current run of Q3s are good...does anyone know if the rest of the R2s like this?

I have an earlier model R2H that has a bubble over the entire die!!! It makes a big difference in output, and it sucks a$$ in an optic. Reflectors don't show the defect as badly, but optics will.

I think the bubble are caused by pressure on the domes pushing out the silicone goo, then being relieved which suck air in.

BTW, I DID NOT buy it from dat2zip.

I am in no way saying that Wayne sells inferior emitters. I think you'll get the same luck from him as you would from anyone else (unless you get a hand-picked emitter, or a light with one in it, which costs extra $$$). In fact, of four modules I have purchased, only one of them had bubbles that were annoying.

I guess your R2 had more light output?

Man do I feel lucky and even more lucky .....
Didn't know bubbled luxeons popped out that often. Since I heard good feedback about HD-Q3Js I bought six of em' from ebay. Only one had a very, very, small bubble, seen if closley examined, and the rest none (visible to naked eye).

The HD-R2K I got from Dat2zip had a bubble about a fifth of the die size that kinda bothered me. It sat at the edge of the die, if I remember correctly.

I had ordered a DB700 w/ the R2K and got a BB700 by mistake. Since I had to send it back, I figured doesn't hurt to ask, so I mentioned it to them. Normally I wouldn't ask coz I know they don't have QC over them being made and it's not their fault. But lovingly, they agreed to exchange it! For this reason and the fact they got me a McLux 1X123BB after they were sold out and taken off the site is the reason why they're my favorite lighting retailer! Yesturday I noticed R2Ks were taken off the site and I mailed my package yesturday. Hope my replacment wasn't forgotten about.

BTW appreciate everyone's info. Helped alot. I've tried fraens & reflectors on a 5W I never used, that I stupidly made a bubble on a while back on 1/2 of the die. Now I'm using it in a Mag2C w/ it's reflector. Barely noticable. Txs!

I've got a R2H with a big, herking bubble in it. Not only that, the die is off center. But since I'm using it in a flood reflector, I'm not going to worry about it. The bottom line is the "Luxeon Lottery" applies to everyone, suppliers and customers alike. Would have been nice if it was prettier, though. Does the bubble occur during the production of the luxeon and not after, e.g if i accidentally pushed the luxeon head, it wont create more bubbles right?

I think the bubble is actually formed in the process of applying the phosphor to the die. I seriously doubt it could be formed from mishandling, a bubble like that would appear near the edge where the lens seals against the base.
