Thread: Good AA LED Flaslight

    Default Good AA LED Flaslight

Any recommendations for a AA LED flashlight with the on/off button on the barrel of the flashlight instead of the button on the end? I find the end button annoying. Maybe I'm just too set in my ways. I have a Dorcey AAA flashlight with this configuration but would like to use my Eneloop AA's in similar flashlight.

Are the Zebralights light enough to carry on your key chain & not do any damage to the car's ignition?

FWIW, the SC51 ways 36g, so just over an ounce.

I wouldn't try it. I wouldn't use anything more then a crummy coin/watch battery key-chain led light... Maybe a AAA light if I only had a few keys on the ring.

If you are looking for a cool looking AA light, I like the looks of the Spark lights. Search Going Gear on you tube for some good video reviews of them.

I have a Zebralight SC51w. It is a great AA powered light, but it would be way heavier than anything I would want on a keychain. Any AA powdered light would be too heavy in my opinion.

Default Superbright AA flashlight for travel and general purpose

Hi, I'm after a superbright AA flashlight for holidays, bush walks, bedstand light, travel, general purpose (AA or AAA. I want more than 200lm):

I have an 18650 flashlight already, I want an AA for 2 reasons:
    - I do a lot of travelling, and lithium batteries aren't allowed on planes down under.
    - I want to easily be able to buy batteries.

FLOOD/THROW: I do not want something too floody but I do not want anything with an aspheric lens or a laser-like deerlight.
I have an Olight i3, 70lm with OP reflector and R5 LED. It provides a good amount of flood and throw.

UI can be anything. I quite like the idea of a magnetic control ring but I dont need it.

A few modes would be nice. Moonlight desirable, not essential.

    2 lights I'm considering:
    - shiningbeam caveman at around 205 ANSI lumens and runs on 2xAA.
    - Maglite XL200 another option, 174 lumens with focusable beam, 3xAAA.

    Any other ideas?
    cheers in advance.

BTW I do own a Maglite Mini and recently purchased a Terralux LED upgrade. The LED stops working when you turn the light upside down. Got it cheap so not sure it is worth returning. I think its time to shelf the mag and get with the times. That thing is 90's technology.

AAA cost allot per amp VS AA
Fenix makes some nice 2xAA worth a look if on a budget
If not a Gizmo with 2xAA pak, HDS systems made a 2XAA tube for there EDC but hard to find, or a little twisty 2xAA

FourSevens Quark AA^2. I have one and love it! Super bright, durable, many modes and levels. There is two versions of the UI. Tactical and Regular. I have the regular version and would not trade it for the world.

    Hi Rambo180.

Here are some more suggestions to assist in making the decision harder :-)

    2 x AA lights
    Eagletac D25A2 at 325 lumen
    Jetbeam BA20 at 270 lumen
    Shiningbeam Caveman at 290 lumen
Thrunite Neutron 2A at 260 lumen
    Sunwayman V20A at 210 lumen

    3 x AA lights
Olight S35 Baton at 380 lumen
    Sunwayman M30A at 240 lumen

    4 x AA lights
    Fenix LD40 at 240 lumen
    Jetbeam PA40 at 468 lumen
    Sunwayman M40A at 500 lumen

    6 x AA lights
Olight S65 Baton at 700 lumen

    8 x AA lights
    Fenix TK41 at 800 lumen

Take a serious look at the S35. It is surprisingly small with a ton of output.
The Caveman is a very nice simple, solid light too.
If you want variable output, then the Sunwayman V20A is the one.

    Hope this helps.

you achieved your goal. cheers. the S35 is looking promising. Can we point out any more throwy lights?
looked at the PA40 but with a small OP reflector, I don't think it will suit.

Cheers for the replies bedazzle, grimacing, bushmaster, cmag (excuse my spellling). will checkout the suggestions. 4sevens, fenix and eagletac I will look at.

If you want more throw, consider the 4Sevens Quark AA^2 Turbo (Foursevens Turbo QB2A).

The Olight S35 looks like it could be nice for you, but it's 3xAA. Consider this if you plan to mostly use eneloops (which I'd recommend). 3xAA is fine if you have a single AA light to use the 4th battery, but try to keep the sets marked and matched, because things will go wrong eventually if you use two fresh and one half-depleted cell. Also make sure you'd have an individual channel charger.

2xAA is more versatile imo, so maybe consider one of these:
    - Quark Turbo: Good throw, poor UI (some love it though, so a matter of opinion)
    - NiteCore EA2: very good throw and tiny for a 2xAA light.
    - EagleTac P20A2: nice little throw also, and not too expensive

For a really compact general purpose (between flood and throw) 2xAA light, the EagleTac D25A2 clicky is a great choice.

You've already had some great suggestions above, so just posting the ones that weren't mentioned and stand out to me (also looking for an AA thrower).

Lightbulb Re: Superbright AA flashlight for travel and general purpose

One of my favorite single AA lights is the Sunwayman V10A. May not have as much throw as you would like, but it can run on 14500s, which makes it very bright. Excellent construction, and magnetic control ring ... can go very low as well (< 1 lumen), which makes it an excellent bedside light.

Foursevens Quark AA^2 XML (QP2A-X) with an optional 1xAA body. It was the highest output 2xAlk Selfbuilt has ever tested (but may be surpassed now) and a 360 hrs moonlight mode. 1xAA makes it great for pocket EDC and running a 14500. I love the spare 2x tube for a tac-cool spare batt container.

From what I've gathered from reviews and pictures here, Nitecore EA2 appears to have the best combination of throw and runtime among non-aspheric 2xAA lights. Seems perfect for traveling.

Is that purely an Airline policy? CASA has guidelines HERE that state cells up to 100Wh can be transported in carry-on luggage (including spares ie. single cells).

    Using the provided formula Watt hours (Wh) = Amps (Ah) x Voltage (v) let's calculate the Wh of a single 18650 Li-Ion, 2.8Ah x4.2v = 11.76Wh

    Thus...

    8 x 18650 (@ 11.76Wh each) = 94.08Wh total well under the carry-on limit of 100Wh for Li-Ion chemistry cells

thanks. that looks really interesting with the LED indicator. and 280 ANSI lumens on high is insane! funny how they don't even give a runtime for that output. can't imagine it would be too long. looks good!

Just a word of advice here. I would be extremely careful about purchasing any of the new Nitecore Explorer series lights (or any other of their new models for that matter), especially seeing as though just like me that you live in Australia. Because they are not yet available here I ordered two of the EC1's from a Nitecore dealer in the USA and they are both faulty and they will now need to be sent back overseas at a rather great cost. I just thought that I would warn you about it so that you don't end up in the exact same most unfortunate situation that I am currently in. If you want to read my post all about it you can do so here, and I will also add that I am far from being the only one in that thread that has had faulty ones and that then need to be returned. Lastly if you do read the thread I would also just like to add that after Sysmax Industries (JETBeam/Nitecore manufacturer) first posted on it and then contacted me directly about it, they had originally promised me the world and that they would have it all rectified as fast as was humanly possible, however ever since then I have emailed them all of the required information yet they have completely ignored me and I haven't received any further correspondence from them at all and which I am EXTREMELY annoyed about, so just be warned!!!

P.S. Although they have only been out for a week or so, I have also already noticed that there are several people with the new model Nitecore SENS lights and that are claiming to have faulty ones of these too!

    2xAA 250-lm 3-level XP-G 'LumaPower EDC LM32' R5.

    FENIX E21 - 150 LUMENS, LED TORCH

You can also check out the 1AA torches but I do not think the bright ones have the runtime for a bush walk.

    -

Mag has the 2AA MiniMag Pro (1 mode 225 lumens) and Pro+ (2 modes 245 lumens) out in the US but both websites (zbattery and brightguy) carrying them normally ship courier. You can ask if they are willing to ship USPS.

    -

foursevens have the 2AA Mini M2A. Main advantage its only 5" long, fits my jeans back pocket nicely. Twist on off change modes.
    For a push button Quark Pro QP2A;
    Quark Tactical QT2A, Quark Tactical QT2A NW, Quark Tactical QT2A-X, Quark Tactical QT2A-X NW (programmable 2 mode);
Quark Turbo QB2A (big head, more throw).

    Hi rambo180

No problems whatsoever for the help! I would also just like to add that I recently sent another PM to Sysmax Industries just to let them know how bitterly disappointed that I was with their total lack of any response, and to my sheer and utter surprise not only did I receive an extremely apologetic email from them, but I also got a call from them on my mobile phone all the way from France just so that they could apologise to me a little further, well a lot further actually. It now seems that the person who just rang me and who was also meant to reply to all of my messages is currently away overseas at some sort of trade show, and because of this my recent messages had been accidentally overlooked, and so she then went on to tell me around a few hundred times just how sincerely sorry that she was, and it now appears as though they are going to rectify things immediately.

I would also just like to say that teething problems aside, my new Nitecore EC1's have the potential to be absolutely wonderful little lights, and if it wasn't for the fault they would most probably be one of my very favourite "mini" lights. The finish on them is top notch and the looks have grown on me even more as time has passed by, and both the incredibly high output and amount of throw are absolutely astounding for a light of such a minuscule size. The UI is really simple to operate and it is also effortless to lock it out if and when it's required and the red LED quite often comes in very handy, and the fact that it tells you the remaining battery voltage level is really an extremely useful feature as well.

Anyway I just thought that I would write this so as to update the situation that I had described in my previous post. Did I mention that this little sucker is bright!!!

P.S. Just FYI I have also previously purchased several items from Torchworld and I can highly recommend them, and as a matter of fact they used to be located only 5 minutes from my place. Such a darn shame that they moved, well for me anyway!

Just thought that I would also say that not only do I feel that it was really good advice that you had given, but even better than that it appears that you have gone out of your way just to make certain that the information that you had provided was very location specific for the OP. Very nice touch I must say!

I'd recommend the Zebralight SC51 if you want a small and bright 1AA light. It doesn't have the best runtime on high due to the single AA battery but it is small enough to carry with you anywhere. No forward clickie though.

The 4sevens Quark Turbo could be a good light if you want throw and still use AA batteries.
