Thread: Need an Intrinsically Safe SAR Flashlight

Default Need an Intrinsically Safe SAR Flashlight

I'm looking for a high-power flashlight (I figure 500 lumens and up) that can be used to look down L-O-N-G utility tunnels. Must be intrinsically safe due to confined space concerns. Variable power would be a definite bonus. Anyone have any suggestions?

High powered flashlights generally rely on high density cell chemistry (ie. Lithium) to keep their bulk down, Bayco make a Nightstick variant that meets the IS/Atex standards but it's output maxes out around 320Lm (floodlight) OR 240Lm (focused beam)

How about the Fenix TK41? AA powered (so safer than li-ion) and 800 lumens with great throw for reaching down long tunnels.

I know that some Streamlight lights are ATEX approved which can be used in hazardous environments.

But they are not very bright though, the best thrower seems to the the ATEX approved FireVulcan spotlight.

Just browse around Streamlight's website, you should find lights under the "EURO approved ATEX" category.

I would avoid lights with metal body, especially the ones that use body tube to transfer electricity.

Maybe a Surefire G2X would also work, but I would go with lights that are certified for those stuff. Safety always first.

    Good luck.

I would love to use that but it's not certified as intrinsically safe. Intrinsic safety deals with how energy is stored in the device and how the device is designed to prevent micro-sparks from jumping between switch contacts and the like. It would have been great, especially since it is not a rechargeable.

The Surefire G2-FYL with the large head is certified as far as I know. Great throw and 3 modes. Used it on my Cairns helmet for a while with the blackjack mount.

Nice light (but I'm biased), none the less it is still powered by lithium cells, Intrinsically Safe lights need to be unable to become an ignition source when used AND if faulty, lithium cells pose a risk if the cells decide to vent...

I'll second Rambo's suggestion, there have been many inquiries regarding IS lights covering different hazardous environments.
