Thread: Any comparable alternative to Zebralight H600 that uses primaries?

Question Any comparable alternative to Zebralight H600 that uses primaries?

I recently got a ZL H600 that I absolutely love. Unfortunately I also need a headlamp that I can leave in my car and am worried that 18650 battery might pose a hazard if exposed to to the excessive interior temperatures reached in summertime. Is there anything out there in the same league as the H600 that uses CR123 batteries or AA's?

Not that I know of...but...people have threaded two primary cell ZLs onto the same band and gotten a pretty bright light. That would put you in the 400 lumen range.

Aren't there any feasible means to keep the flashlight from excessive outside heat? Like airtight thermoinsulated pouches or something? I'd guess you could have something sufficient from a centimeter-thick slab of polyurethane foam glued to a ziplock bag on both sides. You don't need it to be cool after all, just prevent it from getting too hot.

Unless it's more convenient to have two headlamps instead of one, of course...

How about a decent headband with a traditional flashlight... both Nitecore and Fenix make decent ones.

I actually got a Nitecore but assumed that a standard light (like a four sevens quark) would probably get to hot for comfort. I must admit I haven't actually tried this option.

I keep some of my gear in a light-colored plastic Coleman cooler in the back of my car (no ice, just relying on the insulation). It slows the heat-up, but temperatures can reach 120F inside the cooler around 4pm. Yes, I've measured it.

I'm actually using my Quark AAX on the Nitecore instead of a H51w.... however, I tend to use the lower modes on a headband.

This is why I love CPF! So awesome that you measured it. Does anyone know how hot is too hot for an 18650 to be stored?

Been trying to find that out myself but no luck at Battery University (could only find charging and operating temperature ranges).

Have you asked in the batteries subforum?

One source here says that specs for an 18650 are 150C (300F) for 10 minutes w/o explosion.

Same document indicates max 95F degrees for storage of an 18650.

Another source says 140F is max storage temp for an 18650.

I'd rather just get another decent headlamp if there is something out there that is comparable to the H600. The Spark ST6 (using CR123s) looks interesting but it hasn't created any where near the buzz associated with the ZL SC/H 600 models. I'd like to find someone who has compared them.

For what it is worth, I have an H600 and a Spark SD6 460NW. I also have the screw in reflector on the SD6. For some reason I love the H600 and hate my SD6. The thing that really throws me off about the SD6 is the weight. I feels like twice the weight and for some reason this really hurts the usability for me. That being said the quality seems very high and bomber. YMMV.

Must be long-term, because that's just silly. Half the world experiences that kind of temperatures in summer, some regions during the night as well. Hell, it's even lower than the normal body temperature...
