What battery options do I have on an old (98-02) e2d I am purchasing a charger for my new inbound sr91 and m21x but I was wondering if I could breathe some new rechargeable life into the old light.

Will 17670's work?

I am currently on the fence between a pila and a Xtar sp, will either do better than the other for this scenario?

If You plan to use rechargeables, get a Lumens factory incan bulb for LiIon cells, the original Surefire bulb would be very dim on rechargeables.
You should measure the internal diameter of the tube to find out if 17670s will work. I use 16650 cells in my E2E, unfortunately the protected ones from intl-outdoor are a little bit too long. With the unprotected You have to check the voltage on a regular base and charge them early to prevent over discharge.
I prefer the XTAR SP2 charger because it has the selectable higher charging currents and it starts with a very low charging current if the batteries are overdischarged.
