Thread: Alternative to a Led Lenser P5 (105 Lumens version)?

  1. #1

Default Alternative to a Led Lenser P5 (105 Lumens version)?

Was going to buy a P5 (£30) to replace my old faithful torch (no idea what it was) that I lost under the bonnet of a customers car .
However after reading this thread http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...for-LED-LENSER I've been put off!

My other option was the Maglite XL200, however I've heard it's smooth sides can be a problem with greasy hands, & seeing as I'm a mechanic I don't want to be dropping my torch down engine bays every other day! lol.
Also at £47 this torch is rather expensive, & at a claimed 172 Lumens it could burn through it's triple AAA batteries rather too quickly, although it does has variable light adjustment.

I already have some AAA rechargeables (3-4 1000 mAh & 4 850 mAh Energizers, I think the cheap batteries got lost with the torch!). However I would need to buy 4 more AAAs anyway as I have a head torch that uses them too.

I'm currently borrowing my dads Photon Proton Pro http://www.photonlight.com/led-flash...aa-flashlight/, apparently about 115 lumens. That costs about £30. It's plenty bright enough for my uses & the single AA battery (1st lithium, current alkaline) it holds last long enough. I was tempted to buy 1 of them but the switch is in a daft place & it's fiddley. Otherwise it seems a good torch to me .

I would need to buy 4x AA rechargeables too (recommendations?), was looking at Ansmann 2850 mAh batteries but an oldish thread here about them had the op test them at no more than ~2700 mAh, & they were nothing special for the price.

After being put off the P5 I started looking again, so far the Fenix LD10 R5 looks good, & it's only £30! .

    Any other recommendations?
    Here's my 'needs' check list.

    1. Buying online (UK)
    2. Budget £30-40 (batteries on top).
    3. Want a torch, aka flashlight
    4. Size 4-5" long, 1" diameter max
    5. LED
    6. Don't care who makes it as long as it lasts
    7. Batteries, AA rechargeable NiMH
    8. 100 ish Lumens
    9. Need a tight beam, doesn't need to be adjustable
    10. I guess an hours runtime will do (seeing as the size limits it to 1 AA I'll have plenty spare )
    11. Durability - Important
    12. Need a tail switch
    13. User Interface (UI) and mode selection - don't care, as long as I can hit either full power or my chosen power on 1st click & off with 1 click
    14. Material/Finish/Coating - Ally, although titanium would be cool!, although I suspect my budget rules that out
    15. NA

    TIA

Would a headlamp work as well?

I'd also suggest looking Shiningbeam's lights too, but I'm not sure how much international shipping would cost.

The Fenix E11 (1xAA) or E21(2xAA) could work well too.

    Thx for your replies
I already have a head torch, it's very useful for 'hands free' working but I need something I can stick down inside engine bays.

I'd rather not ship from abroad, incase their's a problem with the torch or the seller.

    Re Fenix LD22
Hmm very nice spec'ed torch, powerful (190 Lm) & good runtimes , although it's about an 1.25" longer than my spec, I'm sure it'd still go in my pocket but it could well be a problem using it in the tight spaces modern day engine bays have....... yea ~6.25" is too long sadly.
The price is slightly over budget but at £43 (ebay) that wouldn't of been a problem.

    Fenix E21
Another nice torch (150 Lm), much better price £30, but too long unfortunately @ ~6.5" (btw I assume you guys use imperial, if not LMK, I'm used too both!).

    Fenix E11
Yea that's a good candidate, good price at £24, & I've just found somebody selling a 2nd hand one ebay for £1! Lol, bargain! & I've bid on it, see what that ends up at.

    TerraLux 220
Unfortunately at over 11" that is far too long, great price though at £25!
Actually that seems massive for a 2xAA torch, are those dimensions right?? (only sizes I could find were at Amazon stating 279x51 mm)

    Jetbeam BA10
    105x23 mm, 60g, 1AA, 1hr 15mins (really??) @160 Lm, £38 UK , (£22 abroad!)
    Very nice

    Jetbeam BA20
Bloody powerful at 270 Lm!, but sadly too long at 155mm/6.2"

Torches summary so far, (all 1xAA except the TerraLux):-

    Fenix LD 10 R5 ... 100x22 mm, 54g, 1.5hrs @100 Lm (3,13,45,100 Lm), £30
    Fenix LD 15 R4 .... 80x17 mm, 21g, 1.5hrs @117 Lm (8,117 Lm), £38
    Fenix LD 12 R5 ... 105x22 mm, 54g, 2hrs 9min @115 Lm (3,11,60,115 Lm), £40 (ebay)
    Fenix E11 ........... 95x19 mm, 32g, 1hr 50min @105 Lm (32,105 Lm), £24 (plastic lense )
    Jetbeam BA10 ... 105x23 mm, 60g, 1hr 15mins @160 Lm (12,160 Lm), £38 UK, (£22 abroad!)
    Jetbeam PA01 ..... 90x17 mm, 27g, 1.5hrs @140 Lm (6,56,140 Lm), £40

    Jetbeam PA01 reviews, not so glowing! http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...-s-Perspective http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...st-impressions )

How realistic are these runtimes? (especially the LD12 & the BA10).

    TerraLux 180 ..... 148x20 mm, 1.5hrs @180 Lm, £22
    Olite T15 R5 ...... 150x21 mm, 1hr @115 Lm, 52g,

    Oh yea, battery recommendations? (rechargeables)

The runtimes should seem decent if you use rechargeable batteries (for the LD12 and BA10). Here's a review to Fenix's LD10 by selfbuilt (previous 1 AA model). He's got runtime charts (50+ minutes on Turbo, 1 hour 40 minutes on high, 4+ hours on medium). Here's the Jetbeam BA10 at Light-Reviews, also has runtime charts (50+ min on high with a 2 Ah AA, 22 hours on low).

Cool, thanks for that , although I see the current LD10 is R5 (I'd forgotten to put that in my summary).

I was wondering particularly about the LD12 & BA10 because the LD12 claims much longer runtime (just over 1/3) than the LD10, when it has the same LED & battery, & has more Lumens! wth??
Meanwhile the BA10 is much brighter yet has only slightly lower runtime, & that has the same Cree XP-G R5 LED as the LD 10 & 12!

[update] Well the bidding on the 2nd hand E11 went well over my £10 limit, at £17.50 (so far) I just as well get a new 1.

    Oh err, & battery recommendations??

Incase anyone wondered I bought the LD10 R5 (inspite of finally getting my old torch back from the customer, it wasn't under the bonnet apparently), it's a nice bright & compact torch the LD 10 .
Inccidently I read a review which showed the LD10 was brighter than the 12! http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...ix-LD12-Review

Only slight negatives are its rather easy to activate the strobe (although I'm doing that less & less as I get used to it), I sometimes find I've accidently twisted the end dimming it & the battery tube is a little snug, I've discovered that a couple of my batteries had slight damage to their cover & they wouldn't slide in until I sorted that out.

Oh it cost me £30 from torchdirect, who were much cheaper than everyone else, on that torch anyway!
