Is this a good battery/led for a DIY canister ?

Hi, im planning on bulding my first canister light,

Here is my light head:

I think it is a good base, of course some modification will be needed. At almost everywhere i say it, it is sell as a waterproof light.
May try to fit a bigger led, like sst-50 or sst-90.

And this should be my battery:

Good mah rating, but is this battery pack protected ? Is is dangerous to go high amp with this kind of battery (like 9A on a sst-90)
I don't want this thing to blow me up !

Being rectangular the form factor of the battery isnt the greatest. Also feed back suggests capacity is rather exaggerate.

As for the light head it looks like its set up for a flood beam, which isnt ideal for diving. Plus its not designed for diving. It "may" be water proof but is it pressure proof? I wouldnt waste your $$ on it.

You would be far better off building up a maglite based head.

As per the spec sheet, the luminous angle is around 30-40 degrees. That plus the lack of a stated IP rating makes me wary about getting that as a head.

No idea where you live but if in the US try Batteryspace.com or battery junction.com or make your own up if you dare.


Some aspherics are good. some are crap. Cant tell which yours is. But you can try moving the aspheric away from the LED until its tightly focused. If the distance isnt to great and the the beam looks good then you may be on to a winner. But does it have a flat front lens to keep the water away from the aspheric? It needs one and looks like it hasnt.
Are there any O rings sealing the threaded parts?
Is the aluminium anodized? Its a plus if it is.

Im planing putting a 3x XML-U2 in it, with narow lens, there is two model on CN is 1 better then the other ?

Look like the server was down for a few days and my last post is gone, ho well... i will do short.

Lens subject is clear, driver too.

Now its a battery question, if i want to go with the 18650 route, stacking them up.
What should i look for:
high Voltage (12V and medium AH) with the appropriate driver
Low voltage and high AH with the approprite driver

Since Led are 3.7 volt, does the 12V will have some lost ? Or the voltage is regulated and no lost ?
I think i will use 8 or 12 cell combination so i can basicaly do 4S4P or 2S6P what can be a good mix ??

The battery voltage should be matched to the driver requirements.

Depending on what driver and LED load you use you may be able to fine some specs on efficiency to help choose the best voltage for drivers with a wide range of input voltages.

(same number of cell, just wired differently)
This is kind of battery math question.

And if both will give the same batt lenght, is one better then the other ? (going high volt or low volt)

A lot of ifs here.... But your better off with voltage closer to the required value... Given that your intending to power a single sat... Then I'd go with the 7.4 volt, which should be more efficient.

So If i plan lighting up 3X XML-U2 in series should i use 11.1V ?

No that's too close to the edge as voltage requirements will increase slightly do yo thermal resistance, plus
assuming your using a buck driver you still need +1 volt to stay within regulation.

For a 3 up XML I suggest and am using a 14.8

I agree with codiak, 14.8 would be optimal. 11.1 is too close.
