Default New Veleno Designs Quantum DD

I got an email last night from Steve Ku, interesting little light here. The email I received is this:

    Hello,
Sorry for the lack of updates.
I’ve been busy assembling the Quantum DD, a lower priced version of the DD series mini lights.
Illumination Supply in California is handling retail sales.
    Each package includes:
    1 Quantum DD mini light
    1 10180 battery
    1 USB charger
    1 split ring
    1 spare o-ring

    They are available here:

Does this DD have a low voltage shutoff circuit to protect this unprotected battery from being over-discharge?

It's a simple direct-drive light (hence the "DD" in the name). There's no circuit there, but, from what I understand, there's no damage done to the cell from over discharge.

I got mine today. I really hate going to Craig's place because he shows me all these really cool lights and I almost always walk away buying way more than I was hoping to. Today was no exception!

I hope the international export of lithium batteries from the US gets lifted soon. Because that's a great little light but without being able to get the whole package that battery is a PITA to find elsewhere

I think this is wrong. If its a lithium
Ion battery, over discharge will definitely damage it.

There are many lights with Li that are direct driven including the Lummi Wee

That does not mean care should not be observed with regards to li-ion use, it should. Overcharge or over-discharge on the battery will damage it as gunga has stated.

I really like the usb charger, looks like a effective way to charge that little battery.

it will damage it, yep, but due to the energy content of such a small cell the danger is quite a bit less.
not to worry, international distribution will be solved very soon.

This thing is freakin' awesome!! I really didn't know what to expect, but any expectations I had are exceeded by a mile. Cool little package, amazingly quick shipping from Craig. This has a really stable QTC pill in it - the low is REALLY low - and the high is really nice and bright and floody. I couldn't help but put it next to my Spy 007 for comparison, and it's a cool comparison. I'm really, really pleased. Nice tint - solid build quality -nice beam. It's going on my key ring right away and I'll be buying more. I already have another battery on the way from Craig.

IF YOU ARE ON THE FENCE, GET OFF THE FENCE AND GO FOR IT. This is an amazing little package. Thanks Craig and Steve!!!
A few iPhone photos, taken in the joy of the moment...

Really nice packaging with included charger and 10180 cell

Right at home on my key ring...charger just to the right..

Oh, is that what it means? When he released the original model, the 38DD, I thought the name was referring to another thing guys lust after.

True. And my initial thought was that any light can over discharge an unprotected cell. However with direct drive I wonder when the battery voltage gets below the voltage that the LED will fire at if the Light Emitting Diode does not stop conducting. That voltage for an XP-G Light Emitting Diode might just be high enough that it would prevent any serious damage to the battery since it would be like an open circuit (I think). I'm not suggesting anyone run them all the way down as charging Li-Ions is quite the opposite of NiMH and so giving them charges often is good and never letting them run down too far is good. But generally LED's do not conduct (draw power) below their threshold voltage. I'll have to check to see what that is for the XP-G. - Just checked and it looks like an XP-G can fire as low as around 2.45 volts - which would be very bad for a Li-Ion to run that low. Might not kill it but it would certainly shorten it's life.

Ordered my Quantum DD - thanks Craig for making these affordable!

Can the USB charger that comes with the Quantum DD be plugged into AC to USB converters other than on a computer, such as the Kindle (5V/0.85A) or iphone (5V/1A or 2.1A) converters?

    Thanks
