They can be had for $5 on eBay, what is the minimum you would buy just to get the job done? BTW, I am looking to get one to use with my Canon 50D.

Its the same answer as with flashlight parts. How important is what you're doing - the certainty of saving money vs the risk of product failure.

Touring Harbor Freight Tools this week (for the first time in a while), it all made sense. Much of what they carry can't be found at any B/M store because they're tools for special projects. Something you do once in 10-20 years. Prices are low for the same reason. You don't need it to hold up for more than one job and the whole point is to avoid the expense of hiring someone.

Start with the self timer, cheapest 'remote' ever. If you need to do it enough to need a real tool, buy a real tool.

A Canon IR remote is $20.
A ebay radio remote is $20.

The IR remote is very portable, but it needs a line of sight.
Having more functions, the radio remote has a 100m range but it goes on the hotshoe, prohibiting the camera from entering its carry case.

When the DSLR is $2000, one $20 remote doesn't seem much.
