Hello CPFers,
This is a runtime data regarding the recent post about the CR123 500ma Li-Ion.

Below test data is obtained from a setup of a 1 watt Luxeon Q3J + 1 ohm resistor in series. The power house is a AA sized Li-Ion 3.6v 650ma. Condition of Li-Ion is new, ripped out from a new digicam battery pack. It has been fully cycled 5 times. The host is an ARC-LS first run. Original electronics is replaced by the one described above.

This is the first time I am doing a runtime test and I am /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sick.gif at the moment so please bear with me. Test starts at 10:00pm nice and dark.

Below test data is in the format of:
Time - Open load battery voltage - Total Current Draw

10:00PM 4.19v ???ma
--- Fresh off the charger, the Q3J throws a nice saber like light. Very cool.

10:05PM 4.09v 600ma
--- Slight dimming. Had to go to toilet, missout on 10:15PM.

10:15PM ?.??v ???ma
--- ???

10:25PM 3.89v 490ma
--- Slight dimmming. Warm.

10:35PM 3.81v 470ma
--- Slight dimming.

10:45PM 3.78v 450ma
--- Very little dimming.

10:55PM 3.74v 430ma
--- Very little dimming.

11:05PM 3.72v 420ma
--- Slight dimming.
At this time, it is recommended that the Li-Ion should be recharged. It is harmful to continue since the voltage drop will be quite high when the unprotected battery(bare cell) is near depletion. However I continue to torture /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif erm.. test the battery to it's absolute max.

11:10PM 3.69v 400ma
--- Slight dimming.

11:15PM 3.66v 360ma
--- Slight dimming.

11:20PM 3.54v 320ma
--- Slightly dim compared to a normal ARC-LSH.

11:25PM 3.36v 250ma
--- Slight dimming.

11:30PM 3.00v 90ma
--- Slight dimming. Test ends here. Harmful for battery to continue. Total runtime ~1:30 hours.

Because of my primitive lifestyle, I am not able to provide other measurements such as temperature and lux, I hope it's ok. Between the intervals I let the battery and light rest for cooling. I don't like warm or overheating lights.

I've been EDCing lights with Li-Ion for the pass two months and I think they are great in terms of reliability and cost. With the setup, I am able to achieve good brightness overall, probably because the Q3J is overdriven. I am really happy with it. It has quite a long runtime. Pair with converter such as downboy, higher efficiency should be possible. I need to rest /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sick.gif now, hope this is useful.

Vince.
