Today I bought a 10 LED Rayovac EFL6V10LED-B, floating lantern. 85 lumens with 45 hour battery life. Comes with a 6 volt battery, $5.88. What a deal. Edit -- 2-9-2013, Today i noticed my Walmart has lowered the price to $5.48.

The "old" version of this lantern with a krypton bulb is rated 75 lumens and 4.5 hours run time. The NEW 10 LED version is 85 lumens and 45 hours run time with a general purpose non alkaline battery. 10x longer run time with 10 more lumens, can you believe this?

I bought my two at Wal-mart. They weren't listed on the Ray-O-Vac website the last time I checked. These things are pretty handy. Perfect amount of light for most upclose work and if that runtime estimate is accurate.. Well, that will be hard to beat... I would think that a high quality alkaline cell might even provide more run time. I was thinking about maybe modding one to use CR123 or rechargeables. We'll see. I'm sure someone will beat me to that project!!!

Wonder why they used 10 LED's? Why not one or three LED? Any thoughts?

Funny coincidence , I saw those in Walmart just the other day and picked up two, 45 hours runtime seemed pretty impressive. Now, I stumble across this thread. The 85 lumen rating seems realistic compared to other FL1 rated lights. I find it interesting that LED technology has finally gotten to the point of mass production that the mainstream retail companies can sell something this bright at commodity prices. $5.88 and that includes the 6v lantern battery!

Higher number than 1 or 3, for the ignorant.
Lower per-unit cost than 1 or 3, and buy in bulk.
Simpler design (Use internal wires for limited heatsink) than an integrated heatsink.

Can someone do a current test to see if the runtime is bogus...?

Link to Figures Here

Why wouldn't it be? The ANSI FL1 spec really makes mint for these lights. With a cheap 6v cell, the discharge curve does a crazy swoop a few minutes into the runtime. It'll start above their stated output, drop to about 40 lumens (Half of starting current) within ten minutes, and gradually decrease from there.

Ansi FL1 spec: Output after (short interval - 1 minute?) and runtime to 10% of that figure.

*sigh*

We can dream. :)

I just created a comprehensive comparison between four alkaline "D" cells in a battery carrier and a quad alkaline "F" cell in this thread here.

Separate thread created so as to preserve this thread's focus.

I saw these today, next to the Krypton Bulb version.

Are the 6V batteries included, alkaline?

Yes, I have one. Very nice despite being Chinese made. It came with a Zinc-Chloride battery with the old school Rayovac logo. Got it on Black Friday 2012. I usually feel guilty about buying Chinese made lights, but lately I must say I am impressed. Very bright for its class. I wouldn't buy any of those Fenix, Jetbeams, etc though. I would rather spend that kind of money (if I had it) on a high end Maglite or a Sure Fire.

Re: Budget Rayovac 6 Vollt LED Floating Lantern - 10 LED's

Checked these out at Walmart today again. If they had bright blue bodies like the Krypton version I probably would have picked one up.

Does anybody know if these come in a bright color like yellow, orange, bright blue, bright green or bright red?

Also I noticed that some of these Rayovac 10 LED floating lanterns came with Heavy Duty 6V batteries instead of General Purpose. They also seemed slightly heavier as a package, so Im thinking going for the Heavy Duty battery would be the better choice.

Another dumb question...

Are these called Floating Lanterns because they are water tight and float in water?

Im thinking about getting a couple of these for emergecy lights at work, where the large cumbersome size will be useful as a theft deterent as well as easier locating in a power failure. But Id prefer a bright color if I could get it, even if only available with General Purpose 6V batteries.

The only other LED Floating Lantern I could google up is the Eveready Energizer 3 LED 25 Lumen 6V which is Yellow. The only thing I like about it better is the color. Maybe Ill paint the Rayovac?
