I need to come up with a dealer name. I am not revealing the product at this time but I do not think that is so important, I can name the products on the site and on the banner.

The only name I came up with was J.S.Burly's

I am looking for a name for a business but can be registered. My new merchants license just has my name on it but I can change that at anytime.

I came up with J.S.Burly's only because my actual name is Jon Sidney Burlison Jr.

Anyone got any ideas for a business name that could be used with any product.

At the end of November or the begining of December, I will put down my money to CPF and have my banner posted and will be open for business.

Someone is working on the appearance for the banner and I have no idea what they will come up with. But I do need a name, maybe the banner designer will come up with one, maybe not but I would like suggestions.

Thanks,
Jon.

Oh, and if you want to know the products, you will have to wait until I open for business. I am going to avoid haveing the exact same products as the other merchants on CPF and will buy and recomend them for products that I will not be carrying.

welcome to the world of retail (I did sales in specialty retail for about 20 years) ...

name of your business is very important as it catches the customer's eye/ear and sets the tome for their expectations/fantasies/purchases (those last three are closely linked)

think about what sort of impression you are trying to convey ... "J.S Burley's" sounds a little toney--great for men's dress clothing or a conservative pub, but I doubt that you're selling men's clothing...

think about the product in the name (Brightguy, ARC, Surefire)

get as many ideas as you can and write them down even the dumb ones until you find the ones that work for you ... run them past friends and total strangers ...

two books I really like are Paul Hawken's "Growing a Small Business" and (just saw this) "Marketing and Advertising" by the NOLO Press

all the best on your enterprise!! Anxious to see what kind of goodies you'll have for us!

well I have lots of interests. A name that is light specific might be a little limiting. Though I will be starting with something light related, I would like to eventually have an opening page that tells people about the other pages. Then drill down to the appropriate section. The catagories I would like to eventually have would be, Light related, Economics, Dog Stuff, Backpacking, gadgets, then my general hobbies. That is why I was thinking about a flexible name. Maybe I could have one Name for my sites and each with its own independent name.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif I'll have to think on this one and get back to you. But it's good to know things are coming along. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jon- you are absolutely right about not choosing a name that you'll grow out of or that is too exclusive--

the name doesn't have to BE the product(s), but if it is and the name is compelling, that is part of your marketing--everything that carries your biz name is essentailly, an ad.

One biz name until you 're business gets so big you have to spin off a couple of divisions /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Unless you have a product that is so different from everything else that it needs to be marketed differently or to a totally different dmographic

I've got my thinking cap on too. What kind of image do you want? slick? homespun? cerebral? service-oriented? this is an important factor as well as consumers have a personal mythology that determines where they like to shop

sorry to be so analytical, but I've taught a little marketing and networking ...

Oh, I will also be wanting to attach a 1899 to 1929 restored to new condition Antiques page. I tend to be a little conservative in real life so I don't want a name that is over the top.

I actually like J.S. Burly's: (Or maybe J.S. Burley) Kind of classy, short, memorable, works pretty well for about anything you would want to sell.

It didn't hurt J. Peterman.

Anyhow. I won't mention some ridiculous names that come to mind. The name you chose, your own is fine, but what happens if you sell the company?

maybe on opening day....It can be just JonSidneyB's. At least everyone will know who they are dealing with and have a note that business name is pending.

Unless you're planning on developing a business to the extent that the name will be well known (LL Bean, Brookstone, etc.) then the name is very important. If you just have a general name that doesn't say what the business is (like your personal name), you will miss out on a lot of opportunities. Since you have so many interests, you would probably be better off naming them individually. For example, antique restoration should be entirely on its own. You detract from a strong professional image if you mix that business with dog stuff, flashlights, etc.

If this is an internet only business, then the name becomes even more important. One great example is pocketlights.com. I just bought a Newbeam from them. The email acknowledging my order tells me to look at their other sites:

Keychain-Tools.com, PocketGifts-Gifts.com, SurvivalKeychain.com, BlowgunDepot.com, SlingshotDepot.com, CheapSwitchblades.com and KeychainDefense.com.

Businesses spend $$$ on signs and lettering and all kinds of advertising to have their name seen. The name should be your first line of marketing - make the exposure count. Take whatever your first interests are put your personality into it.

Lights, Gadgets, and More. Unique Light Specialists. Jon's Lights and More. Pet Gadgets. 1st Class Antique Restoration. When you find what says what YOU feel, you'll know it.

Good luck.

Too late - there`s already a JSB - they are part of the Cooper Lighting & Security Group, and produce emergency lighting and fire alarm equipment in the UK. No idea what it means though.

I was at the Bank today getting a business account set up. They asked me my business name and said I needed it then. So I am J.S.Burly's for now. I might change it later but that is what I am for now.

Hello nekomane. How are ya. Glad to see you posting on this site.

I agree 100%. Has a very nice ring to it, and is very distinctive too. Best of luck to you with your endeavors.
