And for those interested in the truth...

"A contractor had roasted and primped the turkey to adorn the buffet line, while the 600 soldiers were served from cafeteria-style steam trays, the officials said. They said the bird was not placed there in anticipation of Bush's stealthy visit, and military sources said a trophy turkey is a standard feature of holiday chow lines."

Wow, some terrific reporting from Spiegle in Germany as I haven't seen that anywhere else, even on the internet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

now that you mention it though, it does make sense. The mess kitchens are probably not really setup to roast a turkey.

Now, I await the controversy over the fact that the meal that was prepared there was actually cooked under contract to Haliburton, which makes all of the Army food... The Airforce makes their own, but they are constantly sneaking into the army mess to eat their food /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You offer no explanation of your feelings on the matter. Are you upset that the president was pictured with an allegedly plastic bird? Do you think it is funny? Or are you just disappointed for the troops that won't get to fight over the wishbone?

Every piece of food you see in those cooking books is treated to be better photographed and unedible. I don't think that it makes much difference.
Let's be honest, he does a good job if he can make the world a better place by using the right amount of diplomacy and other political/military powers available to him, not because he's a good cook or anything.
For all the fun it was at the beginning, one does start to feel sorry for him after all these years when every little thing which isn't perfect gets shown like this.

Plastic? I heard it was a hologram generated by a new futuro beam deployed on a spy satellite run by the same people responsible for the Patriot Act. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If the turkey is plastic, a hologram or a dead turkey is it really news? Let me back up, the hologram thing would be pretty cool.

The turkey was dangerously undercooked , turned out to be the Weapon of Mass Destruction that Bush has been looking for all along.

In talking to more military folks today I've heard that having a "hero" version of the steam tray food is pretty common on holidays. So you get them to cook up one bird to show you what the slop in the trays is really supposed to be /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thats what President Bush was holding, the hero bird. But they did not have hundreds of them all carved up for the troops.

Sho' didn't have no 'hero tray' fo' Holidays in them chow halls in th' Nam! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Stateside that was fairly common even back in my day, but as soon as one left 'The World' and ended up in a war zone things changed. Maybe the guys down in Saigon with all the mucky-mucks and such got to see a 'hero tray' but up in the central highlands we were just happy to get hot meals.

(I found it interesting that the Pres' made a visit to another sovereign nation and didn't even say hi to the leaders of it - uh, who are they now? He also stopped at only the one central place for a photo-op with a few hundred troops getting the best food. The remaining thousands didn't even know he was there until they heard it in the news. I'm not saying it should have been any different, just that one has to look at it from a couple of steps back and ask what his real reasons were. Overall, though, it was probably good for at least some of the troops there.)

Tomas: LOL. No offense intended at all, but I just found it funny that you referred to Iraq as a "soverign nation". I guess technically maybe it still is, or soon will be, that is at least until the next time that someone bigger and stronger than them decides that it isn't again, then all bets are off.

You make a good point though. Does Iraq even have a leader yet or are they still just under direct military rule with no real government or freedom of their own? I also wouldn't be willing to count anyone that had a title only but had no real authority to back it up as being a true leader of a country. A leader with a title only, with no real authority to back it up, is no more than a puppet, a figurehead, for show only.

Of course, they probably only want a puppet government in Iraq right now anyway so that they can more easily manipulate the whole oil situation to their best advantage, without anyone having any true power or authority to put up any real degree of resistance. They didn't, after all, spend all of that massive amount of money on a war in the most oil rich part of the world for no real reason, and as the whole world has had ample time to see by now, the war was certainly not anything to do with "weapons of mass destruction that could be used to attack the United States" like we were all told repeatedly when going into this undeclared war.

Draw whatever conclusions that you will from the facts, but as for myself, I've certainly seen more than enough evidence to perceive what is really going on here to my own satisfaction. I fully expect this to be one of those things where the truth will eventually come out into the light of day like 50 years from now when the issue is far far in the past and long forgotten, just like all of the bad things that we are finding out these days about what our government did in the past century that the public knew nothing about at the time.

If nothing else, our government has become quite skilled at seeing to it that the version of the truth that they want to be in the mass media is the one that ends up there. Goodness knows that they *should* be good at it by now, after all, they have had lots of practice over the years at manipulating our media, and therefor, our perception of world events.

I believe the political philosopher Noam Chomsky puts it best when he calls this whole process the "manufacturing of consent" in a democracy. Hypothetical: You are the leader of a democracy and you want to bomb another country for whatever reason, but the people are against you doing it? Easy solution, just use and manipulate the mass media to mold public opinion over time (brainwashing) and make everyone hate that country that you want to bomb and then it's bombs away and not enough people will really care in order to make any kind of real difference, hence, the "manufacturing of consent".

Anyway, good night all. I just thought you guys might enjoy a bit of political philosophy before bedtime. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Heheheh ... I'm glad that "sovereign nation" didn't slip by completely. That was said rather tongue-in-cheek. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Still, though, the visiting head-of-state should have tendered official greetings to whoever is ruling Iraq, eh?. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Take care,

Political Philosopher????? I can't even call Noam Chomsky merely a socialist. He is probably the most visible, most virulent anti-American, full blown communist propagandist living in the US Today. (although he claims to have "rejected marxism and became an avowed anarchist at the age of 10.") He makes Barbara Streisand and Alec Baldwin seem like great American patriots.

Read some of his articles from the mid-70s before he became a little more sophisticated in his language ( He is actually a linguist by profession!)... Just one for example: He very nearly worships Pol Pot and blames the US for the sorry state of the peasants in Cambodia. The "Killing Fields" are our fault: WE forced the benevolent Pol Pot to have to take serious measure against the millions of poor Cambodians because they wanted liberty and a chance to make a few Riels for themselves.

In other writings he hints that Hitler's Holocaust aganst the Jews never happened, just another big lie by America as an excuse to invade europe back in 42 (Even though he is Jewish).... Yes, he has used that "manufactured consent" stuff many times before.

He calls America a "terrorist Nation" quite often. And even though Hillary was one of his greatest proteges, in one speech, he claimed that (paraphrasing) "9-11 was a justly deserved pay-back for Bill Clinton's bombing of of the aspirin factory in Sudan."
