since the fixture says you can use up to a 60w incandescent, Im sure any led made so far will not put out enough heat to damage the fixture/create a fire hazard, but if the fixture in enclosed, it may shorten the LED bulb's life

Your light fixture can accept a bulb which consumes no more than 60 watts of electricity. That would have been incandescent bulb which would have produced about 800 lumens (often abbreviated "lm"). You have already been using a CFL which draws 120 mA @ 240V which is 28.8 watts. In theory the lamp cannot be used with "self ballasted lamps" > 20 w (of which the CFL in use would be one).

However you want to keep going up in lumens... You appear to be in the UK.... A quick check of B&Q does not turn up much. Brighter bulbs are available but they all appear to have B22 (bayonet mount)... you might need an adapter. There would still be the issue that you are all ready drawing more power than the fixture is rated for (but, to be honest, I don't know why they limit the self-ballasted lamps to < 20 w)

The basic steps are to buy a bulb which creates more lumens. Your 28.8 watt bulb probably produces ~1800- 2000 lm. Look for one which has greater output and the right base.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a 12W 2700K GE CFL there. Anthony isn't exactly specifying what light he wants there, how well the air will be able to convect the heat away, and what the maximum bulb length may be. I'd subjectively equate the 700 cfl catalog lumens to less than 600 warm or 500 neutral-white led lumens. If he likes 2700K , the 10W Ledare might be worth a cheap try if it's still a 87+ CRI product: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10266221/

Discussion about the IKEA bulb in French, the old version - measured 92 CRI at olino.org - was the ribbed one, at the bottom of the post:

That's not the right way to calculate the wattage of a CFL powered by an AC source. Multiplying Volts * Amps gives you Volt-Amps, not Watts. (Read up on power factor to start to understand the distinction)

I suspect Marcturus is right - 12W lamp

Yes, quite right. The power factor of a CFL bulb is unlikely to be unity. If the OP has a 12w CFL the next step up is 20W (the maximum that the light fixture is rated for)

20w CFLS are easily purchased. There is a very poor selection of bulbs in that space for LEDs. The only one I can think of is the Philips Master but they are in the 45 pounds range!

Re: How to understand what LED bulbs I need?

Right OK thanks everyone...I just assumed led would be brother but I'm fine with CFLs just after more light, my D40A on turbo or even just high when ceiling bounced is much brighter!!!

I'm not to fussed by tint, I do prefers cooler tints though currently it is a bit on the warm side, but it is indoor lighting so am not after a Cold white, more neutral to slightly warm.

So it looks like I just want any 20W (As that that he Max accepted) CFL bulb. So long as it has the correct fitting.

Any links would be good such as Amazon etc..

Thanks all!

P.s this is a tesco bulb, but I searched the serial and it is a GE bulb (So I think tesco just rebrands them) its a FLE12HLX/827 so just want a brighter version of this then and many a bit cooler I shall see what I can find.

Re: How to understand what LED bulbs I need?

Right iv had a look, and just got one last question, how tight are the "limits" as I have found a bulb I'd like to put in but its 23W not 20W.

And why is there a 20watt limit when it can take 60W of incandescent???? How does that work????

This bulb WILL fit (I fonaly think I understand it better now and it's quite simple, you just need to match power and cap specs for your lamp.)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001BNHV3E/

This will fit with an adapter (Cheap enuf) BUT its 23watt not 20watt but I'd like to put it in.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004LXWQ40/

This will fit without an adapter but is 25watt so think it is to powerful?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000F5FNXO/

I have never noticed any problems with heat with my other bulb, it's an open shade that faces upward very airy not enclosed so I don't think heats a problem.
