Are you sure that they are AA lights?

More likely they are Li-Ion rechargables or CR123-powered lights. (CR123s are slightly fatter than AAs, and much shorter. Very popular for powering high-end lights like Surefires.)

I have never seen anything longer than a 3xAA light - Any more AAs and then it's always at least 2 strings of AAs side-by-side.

I can't help but feel UltraStinger fits the shape description - the camera adds ten pounds, so while the officers would look fatter, the flashlights would appear to be thinner.

Are you sure it wasn't just an UltraStinger?

I remember a pic of such a light that was scanned from a magazine. It had another pic with a smashed pumpkin too.
The barrel of the light was extra thick for added strength...

I searched for it back then, but couldn't find any further info.

hope this helps a bit,

I think it was the Cold Steel "the Brute", mentioned in this thread:
Night Stick flashlight .

If the Brute runs from 7 AA's, it's just crying out for a 5w LS mod.

Does anyone know if this light is still being sold by Cold Steel or retailers? I just checked the Cold Steel website, and didn't see it there. Looks like a very interesting light, kind of like the ASP batonlight.

I am surprised that no one at cpf has a brute flashlight. I'd love to read a review of one.

PS: Wow, I just did 3 or 4 different google searches for this flashlight, and got nada, so you know it must be rare. I think it would be quite a trophy for a serious collector.

The brute has been mentioned off and on since I first came to CPF. I have thought about trying to commission one on several occations by the ModMen.

I think it was declared a baton and made illegal, plus did not sell well.

Default The Brute, declared anything?

I don't know who would "declare it a baton." I don't know who could make it illegal either, a State Legislature, but they don't run all 50 States and the FedGov could not care less unless a bullet or blade comes out of it.

That having been said, I have one of these things, and it is rather abysmal in the actual light side of things, anyone have an LED replacement for the bulb?

Thanks!

Look here for the discussion of the one I modded for the Sheriff. I put a dummy AA cell in it to drop the voltage down to where an Everled would work. As with most LED conversions, it is bright but doesn't have the reach of the origional bulb (which was a strange critter). The most important thing is, the Sheriff likes the conversion.

I forget that I have one of these in an emergency bag in the trunk of my personally owned vehicle. I don't even list it as part of my current inventory of lights. I should acknowledge it. Regardles of its comparative feebleness respective of the current crop of flashlights, it does provide a reasonable, useful output of light.

It is a robust package, capable of the duties for which a typical collapseable baton is used. It's main advantage is that, except for the removeable ends, it is essentially a monolith.

It was likely not a cash cow for Coldsteel. Lynn Thompson would probably prefer to sells edged product anyway.

I am declaring the Brute (aka the "Watermelon Torch") a suitable light source for emergencies.

If Mr. Bulk ever gets the A&B thing going, you would have something close.... if the price is right when they DO become available, I shall have at least two!
