I have a 2014 d25a Ti and was wondering which protected 14500 batteries would fit and allow the head to completely close, allowing access to the turbo mode.

Right now I'm running efest 14500, and they fit perfectly, and would love to run protected cells.

Thread data so far (protected 14500):

  • Fits: EagleTac, AW, Nightcore NL147
  • Not a good fit: Orbtronic

Compat table constructed from comparing measurements against other 14500 batteries. I chose the largest to be the Nitecore NL147, since that is the largest cell verified to work in this thread.

BrandLabelLen.Dia.MFG mAhmAh@1AmAh@2A
TrustfireTF 14500 900mAh50.914.1900724649
AW14500 750mAh51.214.3750697673
EagleTac14500 750mAh51.214.3750766638
NitecoreNL147 14500 750mAh51.514.2750801777

Looks like the Nitecore NL147 is also the highest performing.

One more for AW's. Orbtronic's will only fit if overly tightened.

I found a pretty comprehensive table on 14500 batteries. With the posts on this thread so far, looks like the Nitecore NL147 is the longest that will fit. Have updated my original post with my analysis.

Just found this thread as doing a search,i use KeepPower 14500 and fits fine, works perfectly but i was searching for a more along the lines of"is it ok to run 14500 cells in general"

I had been using an AA eneloop in my d25a ti,now keeppowers have come, charged, tried, awesome but is it ok? read a lot of conflicting reports, gets confusing .

So yes they fit jonathandowers:twothumbs it appears all modes are also kept too
But is this practice ok?
Cheers ven:D

EagleTac D25a owners: which protected 14500 will fit and allow access to all ...

Welp, ET's own specs say it's OK to use them, as long as you don't run max for too long and overheat it, and I haven't read about anyone burning up their lights yet. I personally only like using L91s with this light as it's the only cell that runs moonlight mode properly, and I really like the "bright" half lumen ML. You lose ML on CRAAs and 14500s (and other modes shift), and ML output drops to 1/3-1/2 spec w/PWM behavior on 1.3v Eneloops.

2014 d25a Ti supports 14500s just fine; all modes retained.
2013 d25a Ti, works with 14500, but you lose all modes.

And I believe the keeppower protected are the same cells as the Nitecore protected. I've been using the nitecores, and they've been great! IFest IMRs are noticeably brighter though.

Spec page still says:

Using 4.2V li-ion direct drives the LED and yields maximum output at the expense of extensive heat generated from the LED. ... During direct drive, output at low and medium mode will be higher than normal.

Thanks guys for info, will need to do a more thorough check(in other words remember exactly the result)

To my eyes my low was still low enough form me on 14500 KeepPower cell, all modes, tbh it takes a while(few minutes) to start getting warm warm.....

Just did a test now with the d25cvn de-dome on an efest imr16340 (so warmer tint ) next to the d25a with 14500.The d25a being standard(not bumped up by sir vinh )was obviously bright, but the d25c noticeably brighter. The difference in run time on max is also obvious, good couple of minutes easy on the d25a before getting quite warm(not hot) where as the d25cvn I managed around 40 seconds on turbo before the step down/up/down etc to tell me OI too warm. But did not get as warm to the touch as the d25a....

I love the d25 so much more. I had a jetbeam rrt01 for a year before. And it was too bulky for me to carry. The d25a is a true edc for me, feels just like Chapstick. For times when. I want a bigger light in my pocket, I lug around the nichia 219 mx25L3C (beautiful 1800 lumens).

Oh and the d25c Ti is on sale at eagletac USA for $52 shipped.

If you're looking for a high cri pocket rocket, there was someone that put a triple nichia into a 18mm diameter tube. Roughly the thickness of the jetbeam, pushing out 1000 lumens. I forget what his website is, but I do remember it costing ~$90 shipped.
