recently picked up a cheap china blue laser that runs of two 16340's. it came with a bunch of wierd pattern lenses but i cant figure out why i cant get a regular beam out of it. even just the bare diode is getting me a odd output.

This is with everything removed off the front, bare diode. Should the output be that odd shape?

Understand that a diode laser is a crystal with two or more layers of different materials. The light comes from a thin region where the electrons jump from one type of semiconductor to another. Thus you get light from a thin rectanglar area in the middle of the stack. The laser shown in that picture seems to have some losses at the edges so it's not quite rectangular, but otherwise it looks like a typical laser diode.
