I found this yesterday and placed an order for a satin nickel one:

Barebones Forest Lantern. This looks very, very cool to me!

Warm tint, listed as 3000K
Li-ion powered and comes with built in internal charger w attached cord stored underneath. It sounds like it's got two 18650s inside ("2x8W li-ion cells")
Frosted globe
Variable dimming, up to 325 lumens "5W Cree"
Stainless steel construction
Rear USB charging port, up to 1.5A for cell phones and such
Looks like there is an led power gauge on the front, but it doesn't specify

It's pricey at $80, but I couldn't resist the style. It also comes in a great looking antiqued finish as well. This is probably the best attempt at making a good quality lantern using modern materials, for once, that I've run across.

They also carry a Canyon Lantern. This one looks like an old style box lantern with a round fresnel lens in front (prob isn't, though). The led section pulls out, converting the flashlight to a lantern. 200 lumens, and shares most of the properties above of the Forest. If the Forest checks out when I get it, I may have to go for a Canyon as well.

Hey good luck with that lantern. I agree, a little pricey, but stainless and nostalgic, very nice. :)

Lanterns are probably better for outdoors, than flashlights, but for indoors, I generally prefer flashlights, and outdoors, I like citronella oil lanterns... I don't like biting bugs!

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

Wonder if it will take a couple of the new Panasonic 3600mAh cells...

Yes, they are cool lanterns and I like the modern style Navy Battle lantern a lot. Somebody likes the design of the delta lantern (me too) very nice find and I may grab one myself

They should have done their homework and spec'd it at 8.4v. ;) VOLTS NOT WATTS. :D

I just don't understand these companies these days.

Looking at it another, more plausible, way:
Roughly 2000 mah times roughly 4volts gives you 8 watt-hours, a useful thing to know about rechargeable batteries.
Agreed 8 is not as good for marketing as 8.4. :)

That is not very good then. If that theory is correct then it would only take a single 18650.

REI has both lanterns on the store shelf. They have good reviews but I wasn't impressed with the specs for lumens or runtime.

Also available on Amazon.com for $79. It is pricey but it is also specced higher than the other Li-ion based lanterns that I am aware of.

Hm, well no support for normal batteries means it's going to be of limited use in a power outage, but it's pretty, it'd be a fine camping/picnic table lantern..

I agree, it looks like it has 2 x 2100ma 18650 batteries in it.
Also, it take a 5V INPUT. USB outputs 5V, so you may be able to get a USB cable from a USB output in your car to charge it during an outage if necessary.

By now, you should have gotten it. What are your thoughts?

Is the output regulated?

Who already/still has the forest light lantern?
Would be interesting to hear some opinions about it.
Also about the tint and if the cells (18650?) are easy to replace.

I read the description and then, read it again. I don't see anything about stainless steel construction, just plain steel (which will rust when the coating gets worn away).

It's too bad that so few of the lanterns made these days aren't constructed with higher grade materials.

So far, from what I've read (thought not personally owned), the Streamlight Siege is the high-water mark for a polymer/plastic lantern.

Special thanks to Phaserburn for bringing these neat lights to our attention. :)

Probably worth me pointing out that the price listed for them at Bare Bones Living is now $50.
