does anyone make a pwm driver chip with internal switch that doesn't require coil, can run up to 1amp, has low overhead, and handle up to 40+ volts? looking for the simplest pwm driver with least amount of external parts. thanks

What you are asking for is impossible. Any driver that's going to have different input and output voltages and operate with reasonable efficiency will require a coil or transformer. The only exception is the linear driver, where the output current cannot exceed the input current, and the efficiency cannot exceed Vout/Vin.

The coil/transformer is the basic element that allows (theoretically) lossless voltage/current transformation. Without it you are limited to linear regulators.

i heard someone had chip, coil, caps and all in a single package similar to a TO220.

Linear Technologies makes modules with lots of stuff integrated, but they are a b___h to solder, and not cheap. I saw the other day that someone else is making them too, but I forget who.
