Review of Storacell (Powerpax) 4x18650 battery caddy

DSC_7709.jpg

This style battery caddy has been sold under a couple of different names over time, current it is "Storacell", before that it was "Powerpax" and initially it was "Tools Aviation". This caddy is a new design for 18650 cells, because these cells vary much more in size than other types of cells, it is very interesting to see how well they fit.

How does it look

Each 18650 caddy is delivered in a small plastic bag.

At the current time there is 3 colors (If clear is counted as a color).

The caddy has space for four batteries.

The bottom does not cover the full cell size, this makes it easy to push a cell out.

At the top is a small flexible piece with a bump to hold the cell.

To avoid rattle the caddy is designed to push the cell forward in the slot. This has one disadvantage: stickers on the battery may be damaged/removed when the battery is pushed in, due to the guard in front (If that guard had been a bit more rounded it would have been better, but that is probably not possible to do in the molding). Pressing the cell down when pushing it in will also prevent damage to the sticker.

A couple of different size 18650 batteries. They do all fit nicely in.
It looks like it can handle battery up to 19mm in diameter and 70mm long body, flat top or button top does not matter and is not included in the length.

All the above cells could easily fit in.
The NCR18650B is a very long cell and the purple Efest is standard 18650 in size.

The different length is not a problem.

What about other cell sizes? Here I try a 17670 cell, it is to thin, the lock does not work for it.
It is between 16.6 and 16.9mm in diameter.

Two 18350 does fit and will be held in place, but they are very close to the length limit, i.e. only unprotected flat tops will fit (The bottom cell must be flat top, the other does not matter).

With this type of caddy it is very easy to handle full and empty batteries without any markings, just put the empty in with bottom up.

Conclusion

The caddy can handle the different sizes of 18650 batteries and works good. It is an easy way to carry a couple of spares and also to keep order in all the 18650 at home.
There is a few disadvantages with it: the batteries may slide partially out if there is a hard bump and the caddy does not protect the batteries from rain/water.

I am not new to this type of caddy, I have been using other sizes for a long time and likes them.

thanks you!

Can the plastic crack if dropped on hard floor?

plastic is a bit soft

very good material then.

I will prefer the standard cheap boxes for protection against wrapper oxidation, sun, dirt, dust, humidity, toxics, drops, .. and they are more compact.

For the life of me, I don't see why somebody would take one of these over the cheap plastic snap boxes. More protection, more room inside, not really much bigger with the rounded corner versions, probably lighter in weight and cheaper, too!

I could see if they came with integral belt loops, for wearing on your hips, but they don't.

Thanks for the review. I was interested in the AA and AAA versions of these long ago but was turned off by the high shipping cost to Canada. But now they have a Canadian distributor with free shipping so I ordered an 18650 pack, two 4 x AA pack and one 6 x AAA pack. I have plastic cases I use often but these seem quite useful when you know you will need to do a battery change and accessibility is more important than protection from moisture. Not to mention the available colours are good, I got orange as it seems to offer good visibility when hunting for batteries in a bag or if you drop them in the woods.

If you use them at home, the colors are can be used to key the caddies for capacity or power of cells, but for that it would be useful for some more colors.

Hi HJK, I was wondering if you had ordered these from E2 Field: I ordered them from them as I couldn't find any from European resellers yet but I still haven't received them after 11 days. Can I ask you how long it took for you to get them?

It was surprising fast, it only took 7 days. They must have gone straight through customs without any delay.

Thanks HJK. I hope mine are just delayed by customs - the UPS traking feature stopped tracking in Chicago...
Your item arrived at our USPS origin facility in CHICAGO, IL 60666 on October 4, 2014 at 6:55 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination.

Thanks for the review. I use these for AA and AAA Eneloops, and just ordered one for 18650. One concern I have is whether repeated cell removal and replacement has the potential to damage the wrapping. So far, I think removing the cells from some of my devices is harder on them, but would welcome comments on wear from the caddy.

Just got in my order last night (4x18650, two 4*AA, and one 6*AAA). Like the product so far, they seem to hold the batteries solidly and are really easy to use. The orange colour is very visible too.
