Hey guys I'm looking for a quality bright throw light for my father as a gift. He has been very happy with the 47 aa-2 xml2 I bought him last year. He usually has it on his belt every time I see him. He recently ordered a few 18650 cells (that haven't shown up 2 months later but that's another story) and his browsing various cheap offerings for lights that use that cell. Not being especially thrilled with the idea I've decided to buy him a quality light to utilize these cells with a lumen output that actually matches what it claims. His words are that he wanted more throw and around double the output of his 47 light. They recently sold their house and moved to a very small town in the country with almost no ambient light. He atvs, snowmobiles and is very handy so he uses his flashlight often. He wanted a bright light to "punch through the darkness and bushes and throw further". He wanted a 2 18650 light for run time and overall brightness. I'm sure you guys and gals will help me find a light he'll be happy with. He has no issue wearing it on his belt.

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

__x__I would like to purchase the light in person from a brick and mortar store. I am located in _GTA_____________.
__x__This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I don't know yet
____Up to $25.
____Up to $50.
__x__Up to $100. (flexible)
____Up to $200.
____Up to $300.
____Essentially unlimited.

3) Format:

____I am not sure, please help me decide.
__x__I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).
____I want a self-contained headlamp.
____I want a headlamp with an external pack/power source.
____I want a mounted light (typically for a bicycle or vehicle)
____I want a lantern/area light.
____I want a portable spotlight (it may have an external power source).
____Other ____________________________________________

4) Size:

____MICRO - Keychain size.
____TINY - Every day carry (2-4 inches).
____SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
__x__MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)
____LARGE - Big enough to need its own travel case.
____I don't know/I don't care.

5) Emitter/Light source:

__x__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

__x__I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
__x__I would like a light from a specialty manufacturer (Possibly limited run/Custom).
____I am interested in assembling my own components. (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source).

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Alkaline batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Lithium batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D and CR123 sized cells common to most stores (often a cold weather or long storage choice).
____I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
__x__I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery pack.
____I don't know/I need more information on power sources.

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option
____I want a light that plugs directly into the wall (literally with prongs built into the light)
____I want a light that has a recharging adapter (your typical "wall wart")
____I want a light that snaps into a cradle (usually mounted on a wall)
____I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)
__x__I don't care

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (1-10 lumens).
____I want an indoor "blackout" light (15-50 lumens)
____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
__x__I want search and rescue type illumination (800+ lumens). (multi brightness modes for various use)

____SPECIAL NOTE: Burst/Turbo mode Category - There are several lights that will run at a super bright maximum for a very limited period (usually 5-10 minutes) and then will "step-down" to a lower level for thermal control. Check here if this is acceptable.

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____All Flood: I am doing "arms length" tasks like reading and campsite cooking.
____Wide Flood: I want a defined flood area for semi-close tasks like after-dark campsite tasks or working on a car.
____Narrow Flood: I want a sharply defined flood area that will project some distance for tasks like trail walking.
____Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.
__x__Narrow Throw: I want a beam with a very tight "hot center" and minimal "side-spill". Good for distance viewing, fog, and looking through dense undergrowth.
___x_Turbohead: I want a far-distance projector with a sharply focused spot of light and minimal or zero side-spill. Good for extreme distance and impressing your friends.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)
__x__Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
___x_Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
__x__5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
___x_30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
__x__50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I am searching from a helicopter)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

no set runtime goals

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
__x__Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
____Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't know.

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

____Any size switch will do.
____I need a BIG switch (I'll be using gloves or have very large hands or coordination issues).
____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
__x__I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
__x__I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I want a remote switch (usually found on high-end bicycle headlights)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
_x___I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Oscillating pattern to confuse/blind aka "Police Mode")
__x__I want SOS mode. (blinks in ---...--- emergency pattern)
__x__I want a beacon mode. (Regular flashes at full power to show location.)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).

A small compact thrower that can be worn on the belt is the Eagletac TX25C2 1x18650.

Hopefully you got quality Panasonic 18650 3400mAh cells,
and not some cheap Chinese cells with the word "fire" in it?

Seems like an admirable thing to do.
There are many options. My first comment however, is that there are not a lot of lights (that are high quality) that are 2 x 18650 for under $100. Also, these lights tend to run on the heavy side if you're really going to be wearing it on a belt, say.
I have a great one - The Sunwayman T40cs- throws a great beam and lasts a long time BUT.........
-it's heavy
-well over $100
-the low is not that low at all
-I have a single 18650 Eagletac S200 that throws almost as far and weighs a third (can actually fit in a large pocket) and cost about $75

If you're not just going to be leaving it by a door (like I do with my T40) I would suggest buying a single 18650 and you can always carry the other battery as back up. Lately the singles being made by many companies have almost the same lumens as the doubles and some recent ones even have the large heads (neccessary for big throw) just like the double 18650s. Just my 2 cents.

Take a look at the Acebeam K40m light at banggood.
You'll need three cells but the light puts out 3000 lumens and has an ultra low to blazing high setting.

For 1x18650 battery, try the Nitecore SRT7. However, if you want something comparable that uses 4xAA batteries, try the Sunwayman D40A. Both have reviews on Selfbuilt's website.

ATV/Snowmobiling.... sounds it may see some hard use, how about a seriously bombproof Malkoff Hound Dog with MD4 (2x18650) tube?

Go for the Olight M2X-UT. I just got mine. Olight de-domes the emitter for better throw. The reflector is chosen for a de-domed emitter. It beats the heck out of any non-Vinh single 18650 light that I own. Really nice.

Thanks for the input guys. In talking with him and trying to get information out of him without giving away why I'm asking he seems to like the tight beam on the cheap zoomable lights with basically no spill and all hotspot. He wanted something bright and powerful he could have in the car or on an atv etc but not worn on his person. It's difficult trying to find a quality light that meets the requirements of what he wants without the negatives associated with he cheap lights. Right now I'm leaning towards the ArmyTek Barracuda. It seems to have a very tight beam compared to it's competition

EDIT Does anyone know where they have a side by side comparison between the Malkoff Hound dog and the Barracuda?

It seems his idea of what kind of light he wants is changing and it doesn't seem like a 2 cell monster thrower is going to fit the bill quite right anymore. All I know for sure is it should run an 18650 cell and be around double our Quark X output putting a max around 850-900 lumens or more with multiple modes for closer up work. I'll get more recon done this weekend when he visits. Christmas and his birthday are coming up so I'll be ready to find and buy him a nice light by then.

Thanks for all the help guys.

While the Hound dog is a very nice light it's not a thrower, more of a throwy all round light. The barracuda is about 105,000cd and the Hound dog around 25,000cd.

How reliable do you find the selector ring?

It doesn't have a selector ring (like say, the Nitecore SRT7)...it is a twisty, you have to rotate the entire head to make mode changes. I have a G25C2 Mk II, and I find that if I maintain it (clean and lube threads periodically), it works fine. But it does require more maintenance than a light with side or tailcap switch user interface. The fact is, large, moving parts get dust in them, and the twisting motion does a great job of moving exterior debris toward the inside of the head.

The twisty design is extremely reliable in the long run, though. Whereas any kind of switch will eventually fail, the twisty design is virtually immune to permanent failure.

Thanks for the clarification, I prefer that UI to a selector ring. I'll look into the light but after talking to my dad about what kind of light he wants something along these lines will fit the bill.
