I have a relative in need of a cheap, long-lasting/running LED module. I have a 9P laying around and it will be run off 3x123 obviously, not 18mm cells or anything.

The color tint doesn't really matter either, I would think runtime would be #1 priority but also don't want to go below 30 lumens.

Something between 30-80 lumens would be ideal. Just picture Malkoff M61 "Low-Low" and you get the idea.

Check out the LumensFactory D26 three mode LED drop in at $28 USD. It uses a Cree XP-G2 S2, at 400 lumens. Here is the run time on 3 x CR123a Primaries:
High: ~3 hours, Medium: ~9 Hours, Low: ~60 hours
Since the modes are 5%/30%/100%, that translates to High: 400 lumens. Medium: 120 lumens. Low: 20 lumens. This is in Neutral White tint. It is also available in 90+ CRI at a slightly lower output.

This drop-in also works well with two cells, at about 2/3 of the above run time. So it will work equally well in a 6P or G2. I have two, one neutral white in my Seraph 6, and one 90+ CRI in my original G2. Both are great!

Interesting possibility. I did not think about multimode.

I don't gift Malkoffs to non-enthusiasts who lose things. My budget is under 20.

Not sure I'd be comfortable gifting a flashlight running on 3x lithium primaries to "non-enthusiasts who lose things" either ... :eek:oo:

Did you consider a module that might run on 2x AA (with a sleeve), instead ? ;)

Of course I did -- that's why I want something low-powered, that will run just fine on 2xAA as well.

It's the non-enthusiasts.

A mini-mag on 2aa would be the first obvious choice but I already have a 9P body laying around that's not used -- and a supply of 123s.

You might consider a Convoy light. They are typically less than $20, and come with modern emitters.

You can choose how hard (or softly) they are driven, and choose the tint. Again typically they have a 5% 40% and 100% mode and you can program the blinkies in or out. Unfortunately for your CR123 supply, they only burn 18650s.

Convoy S2 Cree XM-L U2-1B 1400ma 2-Group 3/5-Mode EDC LED Flashlight Cool white tint
Convoy S2 Cree XM-L T5-5C 2-Group 3/5-Mode EDC LED Flashlight For a more warm/neutral tint

To switch mode group: switch to low mode and wait for 5 seconds.
As soon as you notice a quick blink, half press the power switch
and mode group is then toggled.

Group 1 (5-Mode): Lo (5%) > Mid (40%) > Hi (100%) > Strobe > SOS;
Group 2 (3-Mode): Lo (5%) > Mid (40%) > Hi (100%)

From a 3400 mAh battery one might expect:

low: 30-35 lumen: 40 hours.
mid: 150-200 lumen: 6 hours.
max: 400-450 lumen: 2.5 hours

Just a thought.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood.

The 2xAA could be run in the 9P with a 3V dropin.

I would be worried that 3x primaries could get mismatched & go :poof:
