Greetings!

I have an older Surefire Z2 that I have converted to LED with a Malkoff drop-in a while back. I would appreciate recommendations for the best options for rechargeable batteries for this light. Thanks!

I recently converted a G2 and a 6P to LED, and what I use are Efest ICR 16650 cells. They are unprotected, so I have to check my voltages every now and then, but they fit well without rattling, and work great. Some members have said they have been able to use 17650 cells, but they sometimes don't fit, especially if they are protected.
Of course you could always go with two RCR123 cells, or even two 16340 cells, as long as your LED drop-in will take the higher voltage. If I remember correctly, Malkoffs don't, so I guess that wouldn't be an option for you.
Let us know what you pick and how it turns out.

Sanyo 16650 cells. I found these to be the best on the market so far.
They are a direct replacement for any 2 x CR123A light.

Fasttech. 2500 mAh 16650 ZTA cells. The cells are unprotected. But I prefer unprotected cells. I think they are the newest 16650 cells out. Very good results with them.
I paid for the updated shipping (10 Day) for an extra dollar or two and received them very fast. Within a week. It was worth it.

I bored mine using sandpaper taped to a large drill bit, came out fine.

Search Youtube for 'How to Convert Surefire 6P to 18650 battery'.

It will still accept 2 x CR123's for back-up using an Oveready battery tube.

That would certainly simplify things as I already use 18650 batteries. Thanks!
