1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light in person from a brick and mortar store. I am located in ______________.
__X_This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I don't know yet
____Up to $25.
____Up to $50.
__X__Up to $100.
____Up to $200.
____Up to $300.
____Essentially unlimited.
If it cost a bit more it is not great problem. However the budget should include batteries (+ preferably spare one) and charger. (If not AA-powered. I've shitload of eneloops)

3) Format:

____I am not sure, please help me decide.
__x__I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).
____I want a self-contained headlamp.
____I want a headlamp with an external pack/power source.
____I want a mounted light (typically for a bicycle or vehicle)
____I want a lantern/area light.
____I want a portable spotlight (it may have an external power source).
____Other ____________________________________________

4) Size:

____MICRO - Keychain size.
__X__TINY - Every day carry (2-4 inches).
__X__SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
____MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)
____LARGE - Big enough to need its own travel case.
____I don't know/I don't care.

5) Emitter/Light source:

__x__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

__x__I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would like a light from a specialty manufacturer (Possibly limited run/Custom).
____I am interested in assembling my own components. (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source).

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Alkaline batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Lithium batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D and CR123 sized cells common to most stores (often a cold weather or long storage choice).
__x__I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
__x__I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).
__x__I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery pack.
____I don't know/I need more information on power sources.

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option
____I want a light that plugs directly into the wall (literally with prongs built into the light)
__x__I want a light that has a recharging adapter (your typical "wall wart")
____I want a light that snaps into a cradle (usually mounted on a wall)
__x__I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)
____I don't care
See budget section. If other than AA budget should include batteries and charger. If integrated battery, battery life should be long enough.

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (1-10 lumens).
____I want an indoor "blackout" light (15-50 lumens)
____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
__X__I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
____I want search and rescue type illumination (800+ lumens).
But more is allways better! I love power!
__X__SPECIAL NOTE: Burst/Turbo mode Category - There are several lights that will run at a super bright maximum for a very limited period (usually 5-10 minutes) and then will "step-down" to a lower level for thermal control. Check here if this is acceptable.

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____All Flood: I am doing "arms length" tasks like reading and campsite cooking.
____Wide Flood: I want a defined flood area for semi-close tasks like after-dark campsite tasks or working on a car.
____Narrow Flood: I want a sharply defined flood area that will project some distance for tasks like trail walking.
__X__Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.
____Narrow Throw: I want a beam with a very tight "hot center" and minimal "side-spill". Good for distance viewing, fog, and looking through dense undergrowth.
____Turbohead: I want a far-distance projector with a sharply focused spot of light and minimal or zero side-spill. Good for extreme distance and impressing your friends.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)
__x__Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
__x__Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
__x__5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
__x__30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I am searching from a helicopter)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
__x__90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).
I would prefer digitally regulated output that has constant output until it drops to lower level. (Stopping suddenly

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
__X__Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
____Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't know.

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

__x__Any size switch will do.
____I need a BIG switch (I'll be using gloves or have very large hands or coordination issues).
____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened). NO!
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I want a remote switch (usually found on high-end bicycle headlights)
____I don't care.
__X__I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.
Momentary activation would be nice but not necessity. Maybe multiple switches?

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
__x__I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
__x__I want a strobe mode. (Oscillating pattern to confuse/blind aka "Police Mode")
____I want SOS mode. (blinks in ---...--- emergency pattern)
__x__I want a beacon mode. (Regular flashes at full power to show location.)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
Strobe and beacon are nice to have but not necessity. However I'd like to have beacon or momentary on switch or both.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
____Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
__X__I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Water resistance
____None needed
__x__IPX4 (Splash resistant)
____IPX7 (Waterproof to 1 meter/30min)
____IPX8 (Submersible to greater than 1 meter for 4 hours)

16) Storage conditions
____In house (temperature/climate controlled environment)
____Emergency kit (long standby periods)
____Automobile glove-box (wide temperature swings, long standby periods, critical reliability)
__x__Other EDC. In my jacket pocket.

17) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any/all below.

____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking, Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Diffuser/torch would be nice.

Hope my requirements are not completely retarded and impossible =)

What do you think of ven's suggestion of the D25C vn?

EDC means Every Day Carry. I believe that MOST people don't EDC a light that is larger than a CR123 light, many have larger lights, but they are not typically carried on their person, maybe in the car, or in a tool box.

I don't know what the run-times are for the D2Cvn, but on turbo, the battery will drain quickly, but you will get good run-times at medium, and I guess about an hour on high.

Almost every light I've ever EDC'ed has been AA or (small form factor) 18650 sized. My current EDC is a 16650 modified V11R. I'm a fairly slight/thin girl too - usually wear jeans and carry my light and keys in my pocket. Phone and everything else in my bag though! :)

Point being, lots of lights larger than CR123 are easily EDC'ed.

I'm big on CR2 size lights. Lots of power in a small package. The 4Sevens Quark Mini MLR2 is one of my faves. Plus all the Muyshondt Aeons and Ions and other lights in the same form factor and others. There are more of these lights than I realized before I started collecting them. I have around 35 different ones at this point.

I agree, that small form factor 18650 light CAN be EDCed, I fairly often throw my Convoy S2 in my pocket, when I expect to want a light. However, IMO, it's too big to EDC. My EDC is a DQG AAA. A thrunite Ti is too big. All in all, it is up to the OP to decide what size he wants to carry. There's a thread around here somewhere... "what's in you pockets" that supports my earlier comment, that most people carry smaller lights.

I EDC a modded Fenix PD35 almost 100% of my waking hours, so carrying an 18650 light is doable if you don't mind holstering it or have large/cargo pockets or something similar. That is a light you might want to look at, by the way, to see if it would work for you. Good luck!

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the SC62. At about 3.8 inches long, it's smaller than many 1xAA lights, yet features the power and runtime of an 18650. If you don't want or need a really throwy light, there is no beating the SC62.

I'd prefer to buy stock light. Just to be absolutely sure and have reliable and long enough warranty. Sorry Vinh =(

You should see my pockets. =) I can fit 15 cm (6 inch) light in my jacket fine. Smaller is fine too but it's size is not an advantage.

With a quick glance both these look nice having both advantages of its own. I must read reviews when I've more time. (Selfbuilt is making very deep ones =)

If someone is looking for a true EVERYday carry, I usually recommend a CR123, AA or AAA light. 18650 lights are great - I have several - but they can be a little on the big side to carry at all times. A true EDC is one that you will always have with you, and doesn't get in your way...

I carry the Eagletac D25a. I never know it's there until I need it.

Yeah, love the power of 18650 lights with single cell models now putting out 1000 lumens or more, but they're a little big for pocket carry, unless it's in a jacket. Still, sometimes I'll EDC one of them just for old time's sake since those were the first lithium ion lights I got into, oddly enough, not the CR123A size ones, although I have a lot of those now too.

I'd prefer to buy stock light. Just to be absolutely sure and have reliable and long enough warranty. Sorry Vinh =(

Imo and from experience vinhs warranty is far better than "most" manufacturers. Certainly ones or most made in China that require weeks of sending off and returning times ,only to find 6+ weeks later it's still DOA.

Vinh is days if any issue ,not only that,he opens the light up,replaces wires with thicker grade, far better heat sinking and Midwest current bumps . Fully tested to distruction before selling a batch. So far less chance of any DOA lights and made better :)

So don't let that put you off ,if anything it should be at the top of considerations ,again in my humble opinion:)

pd35 is a great light, nice UI nice size build and quite cheap. Other contenders are the p12,ec32 and
Tn12

I loved the pd35 so much Vinh made me a quad xpl version ,2x5000k and 2x6500k xp-l's. Awe own tint of neutral/cool. Personal preference I know but it is awesome and the colour rendition is fantastic .

Vinhs quad pd35vn at over at over 1400lm,maybe closer to 2000lm from what amazing flood and distance I am seeing!!

Pd35/pd35vn quad/ec32vn xpg2 de-dome neutral.

pd35vn

siz wise

my edc right now camping 2x d25c neutral and d25cvn ,awesome edc lights imo

I have a lot of Vinh lights. They are great lights. Most of mine are throwers. However, I do have the D25Cvn XPL 5700. I do not know what the run times would be on Low/med/High. I can tell you you will get 10 minutes of incremental max[2 minute step down] and the voltage would be ~ 3.65 after that!! That is w/ efest IMR 16340 700mAh battery. A great light but because of its power[~1150 max] it is limited because of battery config.

I am confident that you would NOT get ONE[1] hour on high. My guess would be ~ 40 minutes at the most.

For practicality reasons I would recommend the SC62. A very small, compact, powerful 18650 light w/ good run times. For that reason it is my favorite EDC!;)

EDIT: I got myD25Cvn when it came out last September. My HIGH is much HIGHER[~600L] than the D25Cvn w/ drivervn that Justin tested below! With HIGH being 237 lumens you may get 1 hour of run time! I realize this is programmable. Just guessing this is where Poppy's estimate came from in post #5.:D

Eagletac D25cvn XPL 4000k drivervn
Kinoko IMR
1044@ turn on
912@ 30sec
237 high
85 mid
25 low
6 low 2
0.13 firefly
9,300 Lux

It is hard compare 16340 w/ 18650. With the SC62 being so compact[among other things] I would still choose it,even though I love my D25cvn!
