18650 and most LiIon are manufactured with flat top, this do sometimes makes it difficult to use them in series and it prevents mechanical polarity protection.
To fix this some manufactures add a button top to the batteries.
It has nothing to do with protection!

As we're usually talking bare cells there, this may be regarded as a feature (idiot-proof, in a way). Perhaps one of the reasons why most Li-ions cylindrical cells are manufactured with flat tops.
