I'm far from being a HID expert (I own quite a few) but with the small hot spot at least on short arc versions, they're not designed for broad area but a tight beam pattern.

Secondly, none of my lights allow you to unscrew the reflector.

The Fenix has the CL25R which is rechargeable and put out 350 lumens.

I tinkered with this a couple of years ago... Biggest issue was positioning the bulb in a way that there wasn't excessive wear on the bulb, HID doesn't like being up/down and that made it awkward. 2nd issue was heat, plastic won't cut it. 3rd, HID was ultimately too inefficient compared to LED in a lantern.
4th, HID needs warm up/cool down time, as well as no dimming option....
It's a novel idea but today's LEDs have it beat.
