Thread: Why choose Sony VTC5 over VTC6 for flashlight use?

Shrug Why choose Sony VTC5 over VTC6 for flashlight use?

The Sony VTC5 is a great high current cell, but will it actually perform any better than the Sony VTC6 in even the most supercharged flashlight? I really want to think that the VTC5 will make my harder driven lights really pop, but I am not sure it will. Can anyone convince me?

Why don't you start by looking at HKJ comparator and then click the battery for its review?

Well, we also have the VTC5A, which slides in between the VTC5 and the VTC6.

The VTC5A holds a slightly higher voltage against the VTC5 and has a bit lower capacity, but it's still slightly lower than the voltage of the VTC6 from 5A-15A.

Of the three variants, the VTC6 is superior in that current range, which is where most of these typical monster (4x18650) lights operate.

I was just looking at this exact cell choice a couple days ago. As far as I can tell there is not a single reason based on HKJs tests that a person should buy the VTC5 over the 6 accept price.

Lower internal resistance, higher capacity, and maintains higher voltage during discharge. So performance wise, as far as I know the VTC6 will be the new king.

Hows Capo doing? HKJ is always my first stop for battery and charger information. My dilemma is whether voltage sag might come in to play or not. I don't think that any of my Vinh lights are driven hard enough to need more than the VTC6, but I am not sure.

You would need to measure the current on high/turbo to know. I'm sure that the VTC5, VTC5A and VTC6 are all quite capable. If you're worried about having enough current for any of his lights, you're probably up against the 'heat wall' anyway and the light will be getting hot pretty quickly and well before the Sonys begin getting tired.

If a few bucks don't matter, get the VTC6 and sleep soundly at night.

I would get the VTC6. I have 4 of them for my M2Xvn/TX25C2vn.I use One for ~15 minutes then put a fresh one in!

Only $2 more than VTC5 at my hometown dealer.$8.09/ea.

Take a look at mooches test for them. He rates the VTC5a as the best 18650 available for high drain use. This is because when really pushed it has the lowest voltage drop of the VTC range. This means more voltage and therefore more current (for a static resistance) meaning more power is dissipated by the device, in terms of LED's that light and heat. However all said and done you most likely won't notice the difference by eye.

With regards to mooches tests, they are mostly aimed at vaping but his constant discharge tests are well executed with good info and graphs. If your ever looking for 18650 data he IS the man.

Thanks for all the great replies guys. The VTC6 is likely the way to go for flashlight use.

You can't go wrong with the VTC6. Little voltage sag, high current capacity, and only 100mAH less REAL capacity than the NCR18650B (200mAH less than the NCR18650GA) make for a winning combination. There just isn't a better all around battery available. Other batteries my beat it in certain areas, like price, capacity, and current draw. But with the exception of price, NOTHING out there beats the VTC6 in any area by a huge margin. And you tend to give up ALOT to get that little bit more. For instance, the NCR18650GA gives up a relatively large amount of current capacity and voltage say for 200mAH greater capacity. And the VTC5 gives up LOTS of capacity to get maybe 5A greater draw.

Where can I find his information? As my wife reminds me all the time, I can't get enough of this stuff.

You are so lucky to have Liion so close to home. Ask Jon if he can get button top VTC6's.

Go to google and type in 'mooch *insert battery here* bench test'

All his tests are on ECF (electronic cigarette forum) so if it says ECF in the web address that's the right place
