Thread: Lost my HDS

    Default Lost my HDS

I recently lost my HDS which I used when backpacking. I loved it. It fit perfectly in my hand and I liked the "clicky" aspect of it rather than twisting something. Before I just go out and buy another HDS, is there something out out there that is a clicky, and comparably sized, that you would recommend?

I had forgotten just how pricey they are.

    Try a malkoff MDC?

The Malkoff MDC is a good suggestion. I own one and think it's great. I've seriously considered an HDS, but don't really think I would benefit from "infinitely" variable output very much. The 3 levels on my MDC are really all I need. Simple and rock solid. There's a Nichia version out there too, if you are willing to sacrifice some output for better color. Although I can afford an HDS, I wonder if I would worry about it when camping, fishing, travelling, etc.... Losing a $100 light is easier to swallow than losing a $300 light. Still might end up with an HDS anyway though- just because....

If you like a compact clicks, you might consider an Elzetta Alpha. Less fancy but just as durable as your HDS.

Why not a 2nd hand HDS. All the HDS, 1/2 the guilt.

This is a good idea. There's a 250lm clicky for $150 on the fb group. That's practically the cost of a Malkoff.

Yes, great deal currently going on the FB group. Check out Flashlight Fanatics if you're not in it already! I have had both the Malkoff MDC and the HDS clicky. HDS is definitely the way to go between the two of them: the programmability and robustness of it simply cannot be beaten. That being said, the Malkoff is definitely a solid option, but with that killer deal...

Bet you could find a 200 LE clicky for a little less.

I feel for you, that's why I take a mini mag when I do kayaking, dropping a hds into the east river would suck. Personally if I was in the market now I'd lean towards the malkoff over the hds for cost alone. All the bells and whistles on the hds are cool but practically speaking not worth the premium.

Where would I find the "FB group" referred to above?

Is Flashlight Fanatics a subgroup in CPF?

I resigned myself to replace the HDS and it is ~$241 + shipping. So I'd be willing to spend that amount. Obviously, I'd like to get away for something less.

In that case, personally, I would look to buy a secondhand one here on CPF.

If you can't find a used one to your liking, then I'd buy new.

Flashlight Fanatics is the Facebook group. Just search it up on Facebook and request to join. If you'd like, I can tell the guy you are interested and have him hold it for you...let me know.

I too lost a$350.00 HDS recently. I'm still depressed. I'm currently carrying a $20.00 piece of crap because I'm now worried about losing it! Good luck with your search.

I would really appreciate that, thank you. I will send a join request to them on FB.

I think I'm going to get a lower-price flashlight to hold me over for a little while. That will give me time to begin the search for an HDS in a relaxed manner.

Would a Zebralight SC52, SC62, SC63 or SC600 be a bad choice or should I just get a Malkoff MDC for now and call it quits?

I can recommend the Zebralights as lower-cost alternatives that are very well-made and have top-notch performance. However, Zebralight is no longer making and selling the SC62. I bought one of the last few they sold. Maybe they are available from another vendor? Good luck with your decision and purchase!

I've lost two HDS over the years and both times I've immediately bought another, out of the MarketPlace where the prices are a little more wallet friendly.

My position is that the Zebralight SC63W is the best light is the peak of cost:benefit equation. Sure, an HDS has advantages but for most use it's really past the point of diminishing returns.

Not to turn this into an HDS vs Zebra thread, I personally wouldn't hesitate to by a Zebra if an HDS is stretching my budget.

I lost a Surefire Aviator the day I bought it. This was many years ago. Had it clipped in my pocket, and it still managed to get loose and go... somewhere. Hence my flashlight holster making began. Haven't lost one since then.

I've nearly lost a lot of gear thanks to pocket clips. I never trust them any more. Deep pocket, holster, or bust.

As said above, consider a used HDS...I edc an HDS clicky with a golden dragon @120 lumens. I bought it a number of years ago for about $130. Money well spent

I think that is especially true with the clickies. Seem to be better bargains available than with the rotaries.

Not many great deals on 325's though.

I second the Zebralight suggestions given above. I've got several HDS lights and love them, but I've also got several Zebras and think they're great too. To be honest I use my HDS lights much more often than my Zebras, and if I found myself HDS-less today by some strange stroke of really bad luck, the first thing I'd buy would be another HDS. But I find Zebras compelling enough that I keep them around anyway. They're great lights.

I tend to carry my sc62w more than my HDS 3 o'clock high rotary because the battery will last longer and it is just as comfortable (actually more comfortable) to pocket carry with a clip. When I am at work and need High CRI I carry the HDS. I have on occasion blinded people when accidentally activating Hi when trying to long press low on the 62w. Since the HDS is a rotary I always get approximately the output I want and 200 lumens isn't blinding anyway. I'm still afraid to lose my ridiculously expensive HDS in the field so it will never come with me on a hike anyway.

I lost a Surefire az2-s once and was gutted... kept missing it fir a good 2-3 years... then introduced myself to HDS... on one occasion I lost a tactical 250 along a river path in the dark U.K. After hours... but I went back, retraced my steps till I found it. It's like it was calling to me. Few times I ve misplaced it in the house, got pissed off tearing the place apart till rediscovery and now every one I have is like having kittens... I know exactly where each one is! Most would say that's quite sad... but it is what it is

I only had one HDS but I sold it few years back. Have bought several Zebralight since and I never looked back. Excellent reliability so far from ZL.
What HDS and Zebralight have in common they are both sealed and potted.
You can buy it and use it for 30 days. If is not for you, you can return it. One year warranty is anything goes wrong. After that $15 for any repair, very reasonable.

If you have any 14500 li ion batteries I have a malkoff mdc you can try if youd like. Its a user.

Sorry for your loss. I am a big fan of HDS lights, but I really dig the SC60W and SC62W. The SC63W looks like a good replacement, and 18650 in a CR123 package is nice. Output is crazy high too.

That said, I trust the HDS for the most critical missions. Not taking it when I might need it most out of fear of losing it, well, that does not make sense to me. Since I DO worry about it going missing while I'm not using it, I do this:

And so I don't drop it on a rock while using it, around the wrist it goes:

Just a length of paracord with a constrictor knot. Really reduces the anxiety of stepping out with the HDS on board. Of course, for carrying, a nice Thor's Custom holster is a good option too, and my lanyard will still fit and tuck in to my waist band if I go that way.
