(Got to say, I seriously hate the 3400 ma 18650 single cell format because even a xplhi v6 in a 20 mm smo, needs too much current draw to seriously consider any credible workday length. One swap per day cost over a thousand dollars per year, per man. Also, emergency edc on a tool belt cannot pack spares. So, I seriously hope the single 18650 for dies with the advent of cells with double the capacity : lithium sulphur, solid electrolyte, or 21700. Don't care which, but the sooner, the better.)

Looks like that cell has finally arrived!

Now, can an imr cell explode if my smart charger accidentally over charges-suddenly or latently on head? The pdf mentions cut off, but doesnt say if they are suggesting a circuit cut off, or something built in to cell that cut off at 2.5 and 4.2.

I probably won't be rebuilding my 2x 18650 headlamps for this format. But would not think twice about ditching all single cell lights for this format. Energy density is roughly same for weight as the Panasonic 3400s.

Too bad they've choosen 21700 and not 26650....

For backwards compatibility, true. (2x26650 headlamps don't make sense: better to go 3x18650. True, the 26650 might make more sense for single cell lights.)

In case you missed the thread/articles: Tesla (Panasonic partner) thinks this 21700 is the future (will surpass the 18650 in energy density) and optimal cell size. 26650 never got enough r&d to get as energy dense as the 18650.

Tested by Mooch.

...Samsung does underrate their cells and this one has a 500 cycle rating at 4.8A. Even with the accelerated aging caused by using it as a 10A battery, versus as a 4.8A battery, the cycle life would only be reduced down to the level where the other batteries we use are rated, about 200 cycles…

...This cell performs about as well as the 15A 4000mAh Sanyo NCR20700B down to 3.2V. While the internal resistance of this Samsung is a bit higher than the Sanyo, causing a bit more voltage sag, the higher capacity of this Samsung helps compensate for that. ...

...At 5A continuous this cell delivered about 4498mAh...

Thanks. Read it.

The questions it raises in my mind are: 1. I wonder what the capacity would be a sane .1 C, because I use my lights for work and tasking. So, 10 to 12 hour runtime is my target. 2. How do I attach a wire to a rare earth metal, when I loose magnetization with soldering? (Might be necessary to keep current smart chargers with these cells.)

Interesting. But cigarette smokers ARE drug addicts. Drug addicts abuse everything: thus, expect the same of cell amperage draw.

Thank you for posting this.

I will be using them in an upcoming build.

Would love to see protection IC installed for a two series build.

Anyone know what chargers can handle these larger batteries other than what was mentioned in the Mooch thread? (ie, barely in the efest LUC chargers, and not in the Nitecore D4)

Did some self searching. Here is at least a partial list I found from www.imrbatteries.com
