Alrighty then. Never let it be said that I don't take one for the team.

This is the second 8-pack of Eneloop Gen. 2 GLITTER 5th Anniversary AAs that I got off of WOOT, a few years back, dated 9/2012 on both the pack itself and the batteries.

I did the first 8 battery set here, after 38 months of sitting in their sealed blister packs:

So basically September 2012-September 2017. Five years, or ~60 months, depending on how you want to nit-pick things.

Meat and potatoes:

I didn't mark up the first 8, since I was going to flip the second set for future retirement purposes. I then marked the second set when I realized that I wasn't going to be able to afford that new McLaren. I discharged/'broke-in' these batteries on my Maha C9000 in the same order as the first batch and at the same settings--300mA discharge/1900mAh break-in capacity value.

DMM is a 10+ year old Rat Shack 22-805 jobbie, same as before.

Here's the format:

Out of pack voltage rounded down, if bouncing between two values. Remaining discharge capacity at a 300mA discharge rate. I.R. reading on the Maha C9000 right before 'break-in' commences. Final Maha break-in number based on a 1900mAh capacity value.

Blue: 1.285v, 1127mAh, (1.49v), 1977mAh

Silver: 1.284v, 1148mAh, (1.46v), 1961mAh

Black: 1.285v, 1125mAh, (1.43v), 1953mAh

Green: 1.285v, 1129mAh, (1.48v), 1955mAh

Yellow: 1.285v, 1136mAh, (1.46v), 1960mAh

Orange: 1.285v, 1132mAh, (1.46v), 1955mAh

Pink: 1.284v, 1129mAh, (1.45v), 1937mAh

Purple: 1.285v, 1129mAh, (1.45v), 1943mAh

As you can see, based on a typical capacity of 1950mAh for Eneloop Gen. 2s, as an average, there's almost 60% left in capacity, at least based on a 300mA discharge rate.

They're also very consistent out of the pack.

Anyhow...

Excellent!

This isn't as comprehensive of a performance indicator as HKJ's tests, as we don't know how well they hold voltage at high loads, but it's very encouraging with respect to Sanyo's shelf life claims.

I think the claim at the time yours were made was 70% charge after 5 years (currently claiming 70% after 10 years). If I remember right, they're supposedly charged to ~70% at the factory, so it looks like yours were over 80% of their initial charge coming out of storage, not accounting for the capacity gain at break-in.

I can only discharge then down at 1A, which I might just do to get a few cycles on them.

It's your lucky day Lucky13!

And it's not even the 13th yet!

Here you go, 1A discharge after the 'break-in' on the C9000:

Blue: 1832mAh

Silver: 1810mAh

Green: 1831mAh

Black: 1826mAh

Orange: 1853mAh

Yellow: 1851mAh

Pink: 1868mAh

Purple: 1844mAh

The first quad sat for a couple/few days after the initial 'break-in' while the second quad was breaking in, so perhaps that accounts for the slight difference in capacity when compared to the second set, which was discharged soon after its 'break-in'?

Those numbers all track with HKJ's discharge tests of the Gen. 3 (1800 cycles) and Gen. 4 (2100 cycles) Eneloop AAs at 1A, so not too shabby for 5 year old batteries.

By the time the first set of NiMH batteries I owned was 5 years old, they were barely usable anymore. I used them a lot in a digital camera that took 4 batteries, but they probably had less than 100 cycles on them.

Your test combined with the cycle data somebody else took a while back really drives home to me how reliable Eneloops are.

When I revamped my rechargeable batteries in early 2012, I bought two quads of AccuPower 2900 AAs and 1200 AAAs, PowerEx Imedion AAs, GP ReCyKo AAs and Sanyo 2700 AAs, all being high self discharge types.

With moderate, low drain usage in things like TV remotes, R.F. keyboard/mouse and some anemic lights, I didn't get past 3 years with the Sanyos and AccuPower batteries, before the I.R.s started rising and they wouldn't trigger the Maha.

My PowerEx Imedions and GP ReCyKos are still going strong from that era, but they discharge a bit more than my original Gen. 2 Eneloops.

Live and learn!

Earlier this week I found some of what's called duraloops still in the package at an Ace hardware. The date on the package was 2007 but it was just he copy right. I don't know the last year they were made but all four were at 1.28 volts and are 2000mah. A couple have been recharged so far and they last a long time in some aa flash lights. Even if they're just a few years old that's pretty good. I recently bought a bunch of energizer 2300mah made in Japan like the duraloops that are much more new and they all also were right at 1.28 volts.
