So I found an old 4D cell Maglite that I didn't know I had while cleaning out the basement, and I'd like to build on it. Not really up to speed on the current top LEDs, so I'm looking for some recommendations on what to put in it, preferably for a long throw beam if possible. Raw blinding lumens is ok too though. I already have multiple chargers and 18650s around, so no issues there.

Best bang for the buck is to just get the 55-lumen NiteIze drop-in for $5. Once focused, it throws very well, but it's not an impressive amount of light.

Malkoff has some well regarded LED conversions for Maglites if you want something more impressive. I'm sure there are others as well.

I just did the Fusion upgrade and it's an impressive upgrade over the incandescent previously in the maglite. So it let me keep my flashlight, which is useful -- but it definitely won't be replacing any modern LED lights, even pocket-sized EDC ones - my Thrunite and Emisar 16350 lights outmatch the maglite even with upgrade.
