Bravo, Fenix! I just ordered the LD02 V2.0 yesterday to try out myself to see if it will be adequate for friends without lights that are in the medical profession. Now I see the LD05 V2.0 will be a better tool for these nurses I have in mind. Hope the stock lasts on these, as I won't be able to order more for at least another month. Eventually, I'll be ordering at least two LD05 V2.0 for lab coat breast pockets for those I have in mind, and possibly two more after that for the same reason, exceptional medical pros that make a positive difference in my life.

My list of favorite features that are rare among all flashlights, and none but Fenix have them all:
  • Constant Current circuits
  • Regulated Brightness
  • Mode Memory (surprise!)
  • Reverse Polarity Protection
  • Tail clicky for easy one-handed operation
  • Built-in permanent pocket clip
  • High CRI 3000K emitter, excellent color renditioning for patient examination
  • 2 hours of 100 lumens, nearly 7 hours of 25 lumens, 36 hours of 5 lumens
  • secondary UV 365nm emitter (possibly a decent vein-finder)

I hope this is a developing and lasting trend in the flashlight world, that aside from Fenix, seems to be have stagnated on cheaper PWM-laden drivers and boring, blinding, poor color rendering, often green-casted cool white emitters (though Fenix's standard CW stand out as pure white among those).

Thanks for taking the risk, Fenix!

Thank you for your kind words. Please check the updated LD02 vs. LD05 comparison chart above. We moved that stinkin' little decimal place over on the diameter size. :)

My LD02 V2.0 arrived moments ago. The TIR casts an unexpectedly tight beam. The 3000K HighCRI emitter really illuminates nearly just like an incandescent lamp... attenuates color, makes flesh tones appear natural, and it is very easy on the eyes. The cast is decidedly not "yellow," but it is better described as warm. And surprise, there is an unmentioned secret feature: mode memory. Mode memory solves some vague concern I had (for a light with two very different emitters) when I assumed the driver would always start in low. Instead, the mode remains on the level where it was when switched-off. I'm on the fence about whether to gift this one or keep for myself. I'm definitely buying more to gift... just not sure I can let go of this one. I am not proud.

So if it has mode memory does that mean you have to cycle through UV every time you adjust settings (eg Med to low). That's kinda dumb.

Yes, that's what it means, but I don't see how whether it has mode memory or not could change the fact that there are 4 modes, L-M-H-UV. The modes only advance from 1st mode to 2nd mode, 3rd mode, etc. You can't go directly from medium to low, nor advance the modes in reverse. The sequence is what it is, and most other AAA lights I know only forward advance the modes. I can't imagine any other way it could be, other than always starting in low. I think having mode memory is better in this case (having dual spectrum emitters), rather than always starting in low (no mode memory).

Knowing it has mode memory, you can always set the mode before turning it off to be in the mode you wish it to be when you next activate it, whether immediately or minutes, hours, or days later. The driver remembers the mode you last used when you last switched-off, even across a battery swap, and when you switch it on again, it comes on in that mode. Clicking the light off and on generally does not advance modes (unless madly clicking off and on as fast as possible). The modes only forward advance when the light is on and with a touch or half-press of the switch.

For example, if you are using UV, and you turn the light off, when you turn it back on, it will still be in the UV mode. To leave UV mode, from on, you half-press the switch to get to low, half-press again to medium, half-press again to high, half-press again to UV, etc. What ever mode it is in when you turn the light off, it will be in that mode the next time you turn the light on... this is pretty much by definition what mode memory is.

The only lights I ever used that allowed reverse advancing modes were the BLF (Astrolux) X5 and X6 with toykeeper's firmware interface, where half-pressing the switch quickly advanced forward through the modes, and holding a half-press for a second reverse advanced the modes. Those lights are much larger, have a big button with more travel. LD02 V2.0 is a small light, with a tiny button, and less button travel, so while duplicating that schema in this light is likely possible, it is probably not practical because it would require quite a supple digital dexterity.

It's not 100 lumens for 1 hour and 40 minutes or 2 hours and 10 minutes. It's 100 lumens for maybe five minutes, then it drops to 60 lumens for the rest of its runtime.
Even 25 lumen mode looks like it's down to about 15 lumens after about 15 minutes and stays there for the rest of the runtime.

I think I see your point clearly, and I am forced to agree: 500-1200mAh AAA cells are inadequate. What we need are at least 2000mAh AAA cells, and more! Why has the development of higher capacity AAA cells stagnated? I'm writing my congressman right now to report this, and demand higher capacity AAA cells, and suggest all do the same. This outrage will not stand.

Why don't they just make a 2 x 21700 version of this or 2 x 26650 version? It doesn't make any sense! :)

Oh wait... PEN light. Priority is to the size, not the function.

What an awesome light. I would love to see something like this with a higher output. I need something in this form factor with maybe triple the power (maybe 10440?). I don't care about run time at all, if I can get 15) 10 second bursts out of a charge i'm good. love Fenix lights, good job on this one guys.

I just got this torch today and thought i would do a quick comparison to the Klarus P20 since it's targeted towards the same high CRI pen light market.

I really like the Fenix build quality and tail switch, but I'm not a fan of the tight light beam which is also a bit patchy. The UV feature on this torch is not very good as you have to be in a dark room and very close to the subject for it to be seen, also the beam is very patchy.

The Klarus has a very nice wide light beam that is very smooth, great for close range use (which is what it's intended for)

I purchased these for my partner as she is a doctor. Ill let her use them for a few month then report which one she likes better.

Photos are close to what the eye sees in both color tone and exposure. Photos taken using manual exposure, wall is 2.5 meters from torch/camera. Note there is some slight spill light coming through the window to the right of the frame.

Initially, I had the same thoughts about the UV mode (in LD02 V2), seemed weak. Its difficult to tell whether UV is "bright enough," because even in the best of circumstances, we just do not see UV. The best way I can tell to test the power of UV is to get a good distance away from a flourescing target in a dark room. If you clearly see flourescence from 30 feet away (and I do with this LD02 V2), I'd say that's decent for a light this size. I'm not sure how powerful a UV emitter needs to be in a bright daylight environment to check fluorescing markers on currency from a few inches away, or, say, checking skin for ringworm, or looking for veins. But too powerful a UV emitter, and you're just self-causing permanent eye damage without any benefit.

Does anyone know how many lumens (or a range of lumens) a typical white emitter will produce at 200mW?

I was comparing it to my Solarforce UV Led Bulb which is very powerful. Though the wavelength on that led is from 380 - 450nm, so you get more visible illumination which is not desirable. I much prefer the 365nm on the Fenix. But for anything that is truly UV only sensitive (400mn and below) you have to be very close and in a semi dark room for it to show up.

Anyway it's still a nice feature to have, just wish it was more powerful.

Also just thought ill note my partner said she finds the Fenix better for eye examinations, but prefers the Klarus for examining skin and illuminating dark hospital corridors lol :)

This light is very tempting.

What holds me back from taking the plunge are the relatively tight beam - similar to the inspection beams on the Coast brand lights and wondering if the UV is powerful enough to light the security strips on currency in anything other than very dark ambient light.

How does it work for finding cat pee? How close do you need to be to illuminate it? Does the room need to be dark?

Nice flashlight. I use it for a few weeks in a factory for maintenance work. The colours are very vibrant with is light. The mode memory function is very useful.
