Recently picked up a Black Diamond Cosmo headlamp through a massdrop (unimpressed with MD... prices are ho-hum at best) and was pretty exceited as the specs were reasonable, the weight was low AND it was rated IPX8... Well it arrived and it does appear to be a very nice lamp. Good fit and finish, attractive, bright and an interesting yet versitile UI. I just don't understand how it can be IPX8 rated, though. The battery compartment is completely unsealed. In fact, there is even a gap around the entire edge. I don't see any ridge or slot to house a gasket so unless this is a complete forgery (doubt it, packaging looked legit) then I doubt its a defect. Any thoughts? I did send an email to Black Diamond with pics and will be interested to see their reply as well.

And just to confirm, I did the cup of water test. It failed instantly. I watched the air bubble out as it filled up. I watched the water stream out as it drained when removed.

You know how Black Diamond made up their own definition of runtime? (They measure to 0.25 cd instead of 10% like the rest of the industry.) They also made up their own definition of waterproof! They say the electronics are waterproof but the battery compartment is not. And that after drying out the battery compartment the light will continue to work fine. What a joke.

Any suggestions for a waterproof headlamp with red and white output? Ipx8 would be ideal. Something that runs off a single cell other than 3.7v would be preferable (is NOT 18650/18340 though cr123/16340 would be ok).

Are you sure you need red? A sub-lumen white firefly mode is just as effective for preserving night vision.

The only decent small single-cell options with red that I know of are the Fenix HL16 (1xAA) and the Klarus H1A (1xAA) and the Princeton Tec Remix Pro MPLS (1xCR123A).
